Sunnyvale roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Sunnyvale.
The Census Bureau estimates 156,577 people in Sunnyvale on July 1, 2025. Five state highways cross the city: Interstate 280, US 101, State Route 85, State Route 237 and State Route 82, which is El Camino Real. City Hall is at 456 West Olive Avenue.
Tickets in Sunnyvale come from two agencies. The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety is one of the few fully integrated police and fire departments in the country, and its Public Safety Officers are cross-trained as police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians. They write tickets on city streets. On the freeways, the California Highway Patrol's San Jose, Redwood City and Hollister-Gilroy Areas serve Santa Clara County. Both agencies send their tickets to Santa Clara County Superior Court.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 392 people killed or injured in Sunnyvale crashes, 57th of 62 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Cyclists fare worse than that overall place. Bicyclists killed or injured numbered 39, ranked 19th, and among riders under 15 the city ranked 9th, with 10. Speed-related fatal and injury crashes numbered 88, 33rd, and pedestrians 26, 51st. The rankings speak to citywide conditions, not to fault in one case.
The City Council adopted Sunnyvale's Vision Zero Plan on July 30, 2019. It aims to cut traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50 percent by 2029 and to bring them near zero by 2039. The plan counted 6,244 collisions from 2012 to 2016, and 91 of them killed or seriously injured someone. Only 10 percent of all collisions involved a bicyclist or pedestrian, yet those crashes made up 56 percent of the ones that killed or seriously injured someone. A High Injury Network covering just 7 percent of the city's roads carried 60 percent of those serious crashes, and 60 percent also happened on roads with speed limits above 35 miles per hour.
A Roadway Safety Plan followed on September 29, 2020. It turns a five-year traffic safety analysis into roadway solutions and makes the city eligible for federal funding. At Homestead Road and Mary Avenue, the city runs a pedestrian scramble, a signal that stops all vehicles so people on foot can cross in any direction.
Santa Clara County Superior Court handles tickets from Sunnyvale at the Family Justice Center Courthouse, 201 North First Street in San Jose, and at the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse, 301 Diana Avenue in Morgan Hill, and drivers may use either. South County's DMV court code is 43635. The Family Justice Center's code is not published, so enroll with the code your citation shows. The traffic line for both buildings is (408) 556-3000, and a traffic case stays in the county where the citation was written.
Your citation has to reach the court's system before you can do anything with it. The court says you cannot pay it or sign up for traffic school until then, and its Case Info website shows when the citation has been entered. After that, a courtesy notice outlines your options and gives a due date. The court's bail schedule marks which offenses qualify for traffic school, and choosing it adds a fee for monitoring traffic violator schools that the court sets. Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is paid on its own. State law keeps one traffic school conviction in any 18-month period confidential.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Santa Clara County Superior Court accepts completions only from DMV-licensed schools, and after the school notifies it, the court says you have nothing further to do. Keep your confirmation with your Sunnyvale citation until the case shows as closed.
