Cupertino roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Cupertino.
The Census Bureau estimates 58,333 people in Cupertino on July 1, 2025. Interstate 280 and State Route 85 both pass through the city, and City Hall is at 10300 Torre Avenue.
Cupertino has no police department of its own. Tickets in Cupertino come from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, which provides the city's law enforcement through its West Valley Division, and from the California Highway Patrol on the freeways. The Highway Patrol's Hollister-Gilroy, Redwood City and San Jose Areas serve Santa Clara County. A sheriff's ticket and a Highway Patrol ticket both go to Santa Clara County Superior Court.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 94 people killed or injured in Cupertino crashes, 94th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Bicycling is the exception. The 22 bicyclists killed or injured put Cupertino 14th in the group, well above its overall place. Speed-related fatal and injury collisions numbered 16, ranked 86th, and pedestrian victims 7, also 86th. These figures describe the city's roads, not any one driver's case.
The City Council adopted Cupertino's Vision Zero Action Plan on July 9, 2024. It commits the city to eliminating fatal and serious injury crashes on its streets by 2040. A public collision dashboard shows crash data from 2018 to 2024, drawn from the California Highway Patrol's statewide records, and the city's High Injury Network weights serious and fatal crashes more heavily so that safety work goes where the harm is concentrated.
Santa Clara County Superior Court processes traffic tickets at two courthouses, the Family Justice Center Courthouse at 201 North First Street in San Jose and the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse at 301 Diana Avenue in Morgan Hill. You can use either one, and the traffic line is (408) 556-3000. A new ticket takes some time to reach the court's system. Until it does, you cannot pay it or sign up for traffic school, and the court's Case Info website shows whether it has been entered.
Once your citation is in the system, the court mails a courtesy notice that outlines your options and gives a due date. The court's bail schedule marks each offense as eligible for traffic school or not, and choosing it adds a fee for monitoring traffic violator schools, which the court sets. Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is paid separately. Under state law, one traffic school conviction in any 18-month period stays confidential.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court accepts completions only from DMV-licensed schools and says there is nothing further for you to do after the school notifies it. Keep your confirmation until the court shows the case closed.
