Los Altos Hills roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Los Altos Hills.

The Census Bureau estimates 8,419 people in Los Altos Hills on July 1, 2025. The town's general plan calls its roads typically narrow and winding, shaped by steep terrain, heavy vegetation and creeks. Interstate 280 is the state highway through town and carries its heaviest traffic, and the Page Mill and Foothill Expressways also serve the community. The plan counts no traffic signals or streetlights in town except on El Monte Road, at the Foothill College entrance and at Stonebrook and Voorhees Drives.

Tickets in Los Altos Hills come from two agencies. The town has no police department of its own and contracts with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, whose West Valley Division serves Los Altos Hills, Saratoga, Cupertino and unincorporated county land, with deputies assigned to patrol and traffic among other duties. On Interstate 280 the California Highway Patrol writes the tickets, and its Redwood City, San Jose and Hollister-Gilroy Areas serve Santa Clara County. Sheriff's and Highway Patrol tickets both go to Santa Clara County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.

The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 8 people killed or injured in Los Altos Hills crashes, 50th of 74 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Bicyclists were 6 of those 8, which puts the town 6th in its group for bicyclist victims. Speed-related collisions that killed or hurt someone numbered 2, ranked 46th. With counts this small, one crash can move a rank a long way, and none of it speaks to fault in a particular case.

Bicyclists share these roads with drivers. The general plan lists recreational bicyclists on the road network as a local factor, and it designates Arastradero Road, El Monte Road, Old Page Mill Road and Page Mill Road east of Baleri Ranch Road as regional bikeways. The town's pathway system gives school children, walkers, runners, horseback riders and bicyclists routes through town, and the town asks drivers to use extreme caution when passing bicyclists, equestrians and other path users.

Los Altos Hills tickets are handled by Santa Clara County Superior Court at either of its two traffic courthouses. The Family Justice Center Courthouse stands at 201 North First Street in San Jose, and the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse at 301 Diana Avenue in Morgan Hill. One traffic number, (408) 556-3000, reaches both. The case stays in Santa Clara County wherever you live, because the court says traffic cases must be heard in the county where you got the citation.

Whether you can take traffic school is up to the court. Once your citation reaches its system, the court mails a courtesy notice that lays out your options and a due date, and before then, the court says, you cannot pay the ticket or sign up for traffic school. Each offense in the court's bail schedule is marked eligible or not. Some tickets need a court appearance first, for example after four or more prior traffic convictions or a citation for speeding at a dangerous speed. Traffic school adds a court monitoring fee on top of the bail, which the court sets and your notice shows, and Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is paid separately. By state law, the first traffic school conviction in any 18-month period stays confidential.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court will not accept a completion from a school the DMV has not licensed, and it points drivers to the DMV's Traffic School Search to check. Mirai Traffic School's license is E0756. After the school notifies the court, the court says there is nothing further for you to do.

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Los Altos Hills citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

To Santa Clara County Superior Court, which processes traffic at the Family Justice Center Courthouse in San Jose and at the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse. Either one can take a Los Altos Hills ticket, and the traffic line is (408) 556-3000. Use the court code printed on your citation when you enroll.

The course is $24.99, final exam included. The court's bail and its traffic school monitoring fee are separate and are paid to Santa Clara County Superior Court as your courtesy notice explains. Mirai Traffic School cannot take a court payment for you.

Because 6 of the 8 people the Office of Traffic Safety counted as killed or injured in Los Altos Hills in 2023 were bicyclists. That put the town 6th of 74 similar cities for bicyclist victims, although it ranked 50th overall. The figures describe the town's roads and say nothing about any one driver.

No. The court says traffic cases must be heard in the county where you got the citation, so a Los Altos Hills ticket stays with Santa Clara County Superior Court wherever you live. The Mirai Traffic School course itself is online, so you can take it from anywhere.

Mirai Traffic School submits it through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756 once you pass the final exam, and the court retrieves it there. The court says nothing further is needed from you after the school notifies it. Keep your confirmation with the Los Altos Hills citation.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, West Valley Division, which the town contracts with because it has no police department of its own, and the California Highway Patrol on Interstate 280. Both agencies send tickets to Santa Clara County Superior Court, and the traffic school rules are the same for each.
