Campbell roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Campbell.
The Census Bureau estimates 42,490 people in Campbell on July 1, 2025. Two state routes cross the city, State Route 17 and State Route 85, and City Hall stands at 70 North First Street.
Tickets in Campbell come from two agencies. The Campbell Police Department has served the city since 1952. Its Traffic Unit, part of the Special Enforcement Division, works on reducing traffic accidents and making roads safer, and patrol officers enforce the vehicle code by car, by bicycle and on foot. On State Route 17 and State Route 85 the California Highway Patrol writes the tickets, and its Hollister-Gilroy, Redwood City and San Jose Areas serve Santa Clara County. Either agency's ticket goes to Santa Clara County Superior Court.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 80 people killed or injured in Campbell crashes, 79th of 93 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Speed-related fatal and injury collisions numbered 19, ranked 51st, and 9 bicyclists were killed or injured, ranked 44th. Police made 147 DUI arrests, ranked 78th. Against its peers, Campbell sits toward the safer end of the group, and the figures say nothing about any single case.
In November 2024 the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded Campbell a Safe Streets for All grant for a Comprehensive Traffic Safety Action Plan. The plan aims to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries through low-cost, high-impact measures, and its ultimate goal is to eliminate crash fatalities altogether. The work will include engaging the public, analyzing collision data and compiling a list of countermeasures.
Santa Clara County Superior Court takes traffic tickets at two courthouses, and you can go to either one. The Family Justice Center Courthouse is at 201 North First Street in San Jose, and the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse is at 301 Diana Avenue in Morgan Hill. The traffic line for both is (408) 556-3000. Traffic cases must be heard in the county where you got the citation, so a Campbell ticket stays in Santa Clara County wherever you live.
The court decides whether you may take traffic school. Its bail schedule marks which offenses are eligible, and your courtesy notice lists your options and the due date. Choosing traffic school adds a court fee for monitoring traffic violator schools on top of the bail, and the court sets that amount. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. State law keeps one traffic school conviction in any 18-month period confidential.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court says a licensed school notifies it of your completion and there is nothing further for you to do. Before the due date, confirm that your name, license number and the court code on your citation match the record.
