Milpitas roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Milpitas.
The Census Bureau estimates that 78,596 people lived in Milpitas on July 1, 2025. Interstate 880 runs north and south through the western part of the city toward Alameda County, and Interstate 680 runs through the eastern part toward Contra Costa County. Between the two freeways, Calaveras Boulevard carries State Route 237 across town, and the city's safety plan says about 80 percent of trips on it neither start nor end in Milpitas.
Tickets in Milpitas come from two agencies. The Milpitas Police Department patrols the city's streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City, San Jose and Hollister-Gilroy Areas serve Santa Clara County, freeways included. A ticket from either one goes to Santa Clara County Superior Court, which applies one set of traffic school rules no matter who wrote it.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 212 people killed or injured in Milpitas crashes, 70th of 103 cities in its size group, where 1st is the worst result. Pedestrians hurt or killed numbered 14, 66th in the group, bicyclists 12, 74th, and speed-related crashes that killed or injured someone 39, 50th. These figures describe the city's roads as a whole and say nothing about fault in a single case.
The city's Citywide Travel Safety Plan studied state collision records from 2017 to 2021. Great Mall Parkway at Montague Expressway had more crashes than any other intersection, 35 in all, and it also heads the plan's list for aggressive driving crashes, with 16. The stretch of East Calaveras Boulevard between North Milpitas Boulevard and South Hillview Drive led the road segments with 14. The plan adds that the I-880 and State Route 237 interchange often backs traffic up onto city streets at peak times.
Adult traffic cases from Milpitas belong to Santa Clara County Superior Court, which hears traffic in two buildings. One is the Family Justice Center Courthouse at 201 N. First Street in downtown San Jose. The other is the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse at 301 Diana Avenue, DMV court code 43635. The DMV list gives the Family Justice Center no code of its own, so copy the code from your citation. Both buildings share the traffic line, (408) 556-3000.
The court grants traffic school, and it decides case by case from its bail schedule, which marks each offense as eligible or not. Your courtesy notice lists your options and a due date, and it arrives only after the citation is in the court's system, which is also the earliest you can sign up. On top of the bail, the court adds a fee for monitoring traffic schools and sets that amount itself. A ticket that requires a mandatory appearance means going to court first. Mirai Traffic School charges a separate $24.99 for the course.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court accepts completions only from DMV-licensed schools, and once the school has reported, the court says there is nothing further for you to do. Keep the confirmation with your citation number in case a record needs correcting.
