Concord's freeways, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Concord.

The Census Bureau estimates that 123,261 people lived in Concord on July 1, 2025, on 30.57 square miles of land. Interstate 680 meets State Route 242 in the city, and State Route 242 runs about 3.4 miles from the Pleasant Hill border to State Route 4, which crosses the north side of Concord as an eight-lane freeway. Ygnacio Valley Road passes through Concord on its way to Walnut Creek, where the court for Concord traffic cases stands at number 640. Past Clayton Road the same road becomes Kirker Pass Road and climbs over the hills to Pittsburg.

Tickets in Concord come from two agencies. The Concord Police Department patrols city streets such as Willow Pass Road, Clayton Road and Monument Boulevard. The California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa Area, Dublin Area, Marin Area and Oakland Area serve Contra Costa County, and the Contra Costa Area lists Interstate 680, State Route 4 and State Route 242 among the highways it patrols. Whichever agency stops you, the ticket goes to Contra Costa County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.

The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks Concord against 62 cities of similar size, and its 2023 rankings count 496 people killed or injured in Concord crashes, 36th in the group, where 1st is the worst. Some measures ranked worse. Speed-related crashes numbered 99, 15th, hit-and-run crashes 59, 16th, and pedestrians aged 65 or older killed or injured 11, 4th. These counts measure the city's streets overall and say nothing about any single ticket.

In May 2026 the City Council adopted a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan built on five years of collision records. From 2021 through 2025, Concord streets had 1,804 injury collisions, and 164 of them killed or severely injured someone. In those five years, 20 people died. Willow Pass Road had the most severe crashes, 17, followed by Clayton Road with 16. Unsafe speed was the leading violation, behind 418 collisions, and red-light running and other signal violations contributed to 292. Monument Boulevard, Clayton Road and Willow Pass Road saw the most pedestrians killed or badly hurt, and speeding was the concern named most often in 651 responses to the city's survey, by 68 percent.

Concord has no courthouse on the court's list today. Contra Costa County Superior Court's page for the Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center, at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road, names Concord among the communities its traffic court serves, and that building holds traffic trials and arraignments under DMV court code 07480. The court's phone number is (925) 608-1000. Cases are assigned by where the citation was issued, and the reminder notice the court mails names the courthouse handling yours.

Traffic school is something you ask the court for, and your courtesy notice says whether the ticket qualifies. The court collects the fine plus a traffic school fee of its own, and the notice shows the amounts and the due date. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Contra Costa County Superior Court allows traffic school if you hold a valid California license and have not attended it in California in the past 18 months, counted from one violation date to the other. The court has the final say.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court still expects you to make sure your certificate reached it, so look up your Concord case before the due date. Completing the course keeps one conviction in any 18-month period confidential, so it stays off your driving record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Concord citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Contra Costa County Superior Court, at its Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center, 640 Ygnacio Valley Road, code 07480. The county's other two traffic courts are the George D. Carroll Courthouse in Richmond and the Richard E. Arnason Justice Center in Pittsburg, and your reminder notice says which one has your case.

No. The court's locations page shows seven locations, four in Martinez and one each in Richmond, Pittsburg and Walnut Creek, and none in Concord. Some directories and school websites still describe a Concord Superior Court, so check your ticket and reminder notice before you drive anywhere. The court's Where to File table pairs Concord ZIP codes with a Martinez courthouse, but that table covers other kinds of cases.

Mirai Traffic School charges $24.99 for the online course, final exam included. The fine and the court's traffic school fee are paid to Contra Costa County Superior Court, and your reminder notice shows both. A course receipt is not proof that you paid the court.

By the due date the court sets. It mails a reminder notice to the address on your citation with that date, the amount you owe and whether you can go to traffic school. Handle the ticket on time even if the notice never arrives, because a missed date can add a civil assessment and send the case to the court's collection agency.

Mirai Traffic School enters your completion in the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and Contra Costa County Superior Court receives an electronic certificate. The court says making sure it arrives is your job, so check your Concord case before the due date and keep Mirai Traffic School's confirmation with your citation number.

The Concord Police Department on city streets. On Interstate 680, State Route 4 and State Route 242, the California Highway Patrol, whose Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve the county. All of those tickets go to Contra Costa County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules stay the same.
