Pittsburg roads, crash numbers and the courthouse in town

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Pittsburg.

The Census Bureau estimates 77,542 residents in Pittsburg on July 1, 2025. The city lies on the south shore of Suisun Bay, and State Route 4 cuts through it from west to east as an eight-lane freeway. Kirker Pass Road crosses the northern Diablo Range into Pittsburg, where it becomes Railroad Avenue at Buchanan Road and runs through the center of the city to East 3rd Street near the marina.

Tickets in Pittsburg come from two agencies. The Pittsburg Police Department patrols city streets such as Railroad Avenue, Buchanan Road and West Leland Road. Highway Patrol officers handle State Route 4, and the California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve Contra Costa County. Whichever agency stops you, the ticket goes to Contra Costa County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.

The state Office of Traffic Safety ranks Pittsburg against California cities of 50,001 to 100,000 people. For 2023 it counted 145 people killed or injured in Pittsburg crashes, 92nd of 103, where 1st is the worst. Some counts rank higher. Hit-and-run crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 23, 38th in the group, and 22 pedestrians were killed or injured, 42nd.

When the City Council paid for flashing beacons at five school crossings in November 2023, city collision data showed 193 crashes between vehicles and pedestrians since 2018, five of them fatal. By March 2024, 10 beacons stood on School Street, Seeno Avenue, Riverview Street, West Fourth Street and Buchanan Road.

The city has named Crestview Drive a problem corridor, where speeding drivers spun donuts in the wide intersections. Pittsburg put in temporary medians and a temporary traffic circle there in 2021, police increased enforcement, and in April 2024 the council awarded a contract for raised medians, new markings and crossing improvements at six intersections. In September 2026 the city posted notice that it is starting environmental review of a West Leland Road extension from Santa Teresa Drive to Avila Road.

Pittsburg drivers do not have to leave town for traffic court. Contra Costa County Superior Court hears their cases at the Richard E. Arnason Justice Center, 1000 Center Drive, next door to City Hall where Center Drive meets Railroad Avenue, under DMV court code 07465. The court's page for the building lists Pittsburg among the east county communities it serves, and the court answers at (925) 608-1000.

Traffic school is something you request from the court, and the courtesy notice tells you whether your ticket is eligible. As Pittsburg police explain, the court's bail schedule sets the fine, and the court adds its own traffic school administrative fee, with both amounts and your due date on the notice. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Contra Costa's rule asks for a valid California license and no traffic school in California in the past 18 months, measured from one violation date to the next. The court makes the final decision.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Contra Costa still leaves it to you to confirm that the certificate arrived, so check your case before the due date and make sure your name, license number and court code 07465 match. Finishing the course keeps one conviction in any 18-month period confidential and off your driving record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Pittsburg citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Contra Costa County Superior Court, at the Richard E. Arnason Justice Center, 1000 Center Drive in Pittsburg, code 07465. The court's page for it lists Pittsburg, Bay Point, Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood among the communities it serves. The court location at the bottom of your ticket decides, and the reminder notice names it as well. Call (925) 608-1000 with questions.

Only if your ticket is from Pittsburg, California, spelled without an h, in Contra Costa County. City officials renamed the town Pittsburg on February 11, 1911, after Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A Pennsylvania ticket belongs to a Pennsylvania court, and Mirai Traffic School's license comes from the California DMV. Bay Point, next door, is not part of the city, but its tickets go to the same courthouse.

No. Pittsburg police call it a mechanical violation. Fix it right away, then bring the vehicle to the Police Department lobby during business hours so an officer can inspect it and sign off, before the court date at the bottom of the ticket. The state courts' self-help guide lists equipment problems among the tickets that do not qualify for traffic school.

$24.99 for the online course and final exam. The fine and the court's traffic school administrative fee are separate payments to Contra Costa County Superior Court, and your reminder notice shows both. Paying Mirai Traffic School does not pay the court.

On the due date Contra Costa County Superior Court sets. The reminder notice shows it along with the amount owed and whether traffic school is open to you, and it goes to the address on your citation. The court says to act on time even if that notice never arrives. After a missed date it can add a civil assessment and refer the case to its collection agency.

The Pittsburg Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol on State Route 4. The Highway Patrol's Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve Contra Costa County. Every one of those tickets goes to the same Superior Court, so the traffic school rules stay the same whichever agency stopped you.
