Where a Contra Costa County traffic ticket goes

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Contra Costa County.

Contra Costa County reaches from the San Pablo Bay shoreline to the edge of the Delta, and the Census Bureau estimates that 1,170,070 people lived there in July 2025, in 19 cities and in unincorporated places such as Alamo, Bay Point and Discovery Bay. Interstate 80 runs through El Cerrito, Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole and Hercules to the Carquinez Bridge, and Interstate 580 reaches Richmond over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Interstate 680 comes off the Benicia-Martinez Bridge and heads south through Martinez, Walnut Creek, Danville and San Ramon. State Route 4 links the two ends of the county, from Hercules through Concord and Pittsburg to Antioch and on toward Brentwood.

The state Office of Traffic Safety counted 4,549 people killed or injured in Contra Costa County crashes in 2023. Its rankings weigh crash counts together with population and vehicle miles traveled, so a county this large can post a big total and still rank low. Contra Costa placed 57th of 58, where rank 1 is the worst. Its weakest category was older pedestrians, with 51 people aged 65 or older killed or injured, 25th in the state. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 1,085, which ranked 56th.

When Contra Costa County Superior Court allows traffic school, you pay the fine plus a traffic school administrative fee. The court sets both amounts and the due date, and the reminder notice it mails to the address on your citation shows them. Take care of the ticket on time even if that notice never comes. A missed date can bring a civil assessment and a referral to the court's collection agency. The California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa, Dublin and Marin Areas all serve the county, and a ticket from any of them goes to the same Superior Court as one from a city police officer.

Traffic cases are assigned by where the citation was issued, not by your home address, and three buildings hear them. The court's page for each one names the communities it serves, and together the three lists take in all 19 cities. The Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road serves ten: Concord, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga, Danville, San Ramon and Walnut Creek. The George D. Carroll Courthouse in Richmond serves the West County, from El Cerrito to Hercules, and visitors enter around the corner on Bissell Avenue. The Richard E. Arnason Justice Center at 1000 Center Drive in Pittsburg is the East County courthouse, for Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg along with Bay Point and Discovery Bay.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Contra Costa County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Contra Costa County Superior Court, at the traffic location that covers the place where you were cited: Walnut Creek, Richmond or Pittsburg. Your reminder notice names it. Parking tickets are different, because the court does not handle them, so contact the city printed on the ticket.

Not in the court's traffic section. Some school websites still print a Concord Superior Court on Willow Pass Road with code 07410, but the court's own list of seven locations has no building in Concord. Martinez has several court buildings, and the court's Where to File page adds a trap. Its ZIP code table sends Concord, Clayton and Danville to the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse there. That table is for other case types, and the page's traffic section names only Walnut Creek, Richmond and Pittsburg. The A.F. Bray Courthouse page in Martinez does tag traffic, so if your notice names a Martinez building, follow the notice.

You make two payments. The court collects your fine plus its traffic school administrative fee, and your reminder notice shows how much you owe. Mirai Traffic School's course costs $24.99, paid to us. If the fine is more than you can afford, you can ask the court to consider your ability to pay, with proof that you lack the means, once you plead guilty or no contest.

The court sets the due date and prints it on the reminder notice it mails to the address on your citation. Act on time even if that notice never arrives. If a civil assessment is added because a date passed, form TR-320 asks the court to vacate that fee for good cause, filed by mail or in person at the court on your citation.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School, and your courtesy notice will say. In general, Contra Costa County allows it when you have a valid California license and have not attended traffic school in California in the past 18 months, counted from one violation date to the other. Finishing keeps one conviction in any 18-month period confidential, so it does not show on your driving record.

After you pass the final exam, we report your completion to the DMV electronically. The court says an online school sends it an electronic certificate, but that making sure it arrives is your responsibility. Keep your completion record until your case is closed, and call the court at (925) 608-1000 with any question about it.

Mirai Traffic School offers the full course in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. For a hearing, Contra Costa County asks you to request an interpreter on form MC-300, given to a window or courtroom clerk or emailed to the court's Interpreter Services, with a new form for each hearing. The court says a case may be continued when no interpreter is available, so ask early.
