San Ramon roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in San Ramon.
The Census Bureau estimates 86,209 people in San Ramon on July 1, 2025. Interstate 680 is the state highway through the city. The Iron Horse Trail crosses both Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road, and the city's offices sit at 7000 Bollinger Canyon Road.
Tickets in San Ramon come from two kinds of agency. The San Ramon Police Department enforces traffic law on city streets. On the state highways the California Highway Patrol writes the tickets, and its Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve Contra Costa County. Both kinds of ticket land in Contra Costa County Superior Court, and its traffic school rules do not depend on who wrote the ticket.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings put San Ramon 91st of 103 cities of similar size for people killed or injured in crashes, with 164, where 1st is the worst result. Bicycle riders fared worse than that overall figure. Of the 23 bicyclists killed or injured, ranked 34th in the group, 6 were under 15, ranked 17th. Speed-related fatal and injury collisions numbered 25, ranked 84th, and police made 54 DUI arrests, ranked 16th. The rankings compare San Ramon with similar cities and do not decide any single case.
San Ramon's Safe Routes to School program began in 1989 as a joint effort of the city, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District and the elementary schools. It teaches bicycle safety and pedestrian awareness. Its message to drivers includes obeying the 25 mph limit in school zones and around schools and staying off the cell phone on the way to and from school.
Neighborhood speeding goes through the city's two-phase Residential Traffic Calming Program. Phase I starts with a neighborhood information plan, radar trailers, police enforcement of existing speed limits and pavement markings. If the problem remains, Phase II can add permanent devices such as speed humps, traffic circles, semi-diverters, median barriers and chokers. In 2025 the city also sought design and engineering services for an Iron Horse Trail bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Crow Canyon Road.
Adult traffic tickets from San Ramon go to the Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road in Walnut Creek, DMV court code 07480. The court's page for that building lists San Ramon among the communities its traffic court serves, and the court assigns traffic cases by where the citation was issued. The court's main phone is (925) 608-1000.
The court, not the school, grants traffic school. Contra Costa County Superior Court asks for the fine and its traffic school administrative fee, and your reminder notice shows the amounts and the due date. Mirai Traffic School charges $24.99 on its own. The court allows the course when you hold a valid California license and have not attended traffic school in California in the past 18 months, counting from violation date to violation date. The reminder notice says whether your ticket is eligible.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court treats confirming that the certificate arrived as your responsibility, so look up your San Ramon case before the due date and make sure the name, license number and code 07480 are right.
