Driving in the Town of Danville

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Danville.

Danville is a town, not a city. Its residents voted to incorporate in 1982, and the Census Bureau estimates that 43,302 people lived in Danville town on July 1, 2025, on about 18.1 square miles of land. Interstate 680 runs north and south along the San Ramon Valley and is the main route in and out of town. Camino Tassajara is the main road east, toward the eastern subdivisions and Blackhawk, and Hartz Avenue runs through downtown.

Tickets in Danville come from two agencies. The town has no police force of its own. Since 1982 the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff has patrolled Danville's streets under contract, working as the Danville Police Department. The California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa Area, Dublin Area, Marin Area and Oakland Area serve Contra Costa County, and the Contra Costa Area lists Interstate 680 among the highways it patrols. Tickets from both agencies go to Contra Costa County Superior Court.

In 2025 Danville officers made 8,953 traffic stops, up from 5,376 in 2024, and 108 DUI arrests, and the town recorded 281 collisions. The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 15 people killed or injured in Danville crashes, 90th of 93 cities with 25,001 to 50,000 residents, where 1st is the worst, and no pedestrian was among them. Its composite rank was 93rd of 93.

In January 2024 the Town Council adopted a Local Roadway Safety Plan. It counted 642 collisions on town roads from 2017 to 2021, leaving out state highways such as Interstate 680, and 36 of them killed or severely injured someone. Unsafe speed was the most common violation behind those collisions, at 27 percent, and improper turning came next at 20 percent. The corridor along Sycamore Valley Road and Camino Tassajara had the most fatal and severe crashes in the plan, six, and on Camino Tassajara 49 percent of the high-injury collisions came from unsafe speed.

Danville tickets go to Contra Costa County Superior Court. The town police's own FAQ answers questions about a Danville traffic ticket with the Walnut Creek courthouse at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road, and the court's page for that building, the Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center, lists Danville among the communities its traffic court serves. The building holds traffic trials and arraignments under DMV court code 07480, and the court's phone is (925) 608-1000. The court's Where to File table pairs Danville ZIP codes with a Martinez courthouse, but that table is for other case types. Traffic cases are assigned by where the citation was issued, and your reminder notice names the courthouse.

You ask the court for traffic school, and the courtesy notice it mails says whether your ticket is eligible. The court sets the fine and its own traffic school fee and prints them on that notice with the due date, and Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Contra Costa lets you attend if you hold a valid California license and have not attended traffic school in California in the past 18 months, counted between violation dates. Equipment tickets, such as a broken taillight, do not qualify. The court makes the call.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Contra Costa still makes it your responsibility to see that the certificate arrived, so check your case after you finish. Once that is done, one conviction in any 18-month period stays confidential and does not show on your driving record.

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Danville citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Contra Costa County Superior Court. For Danville, the town police's FAQ names the Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road, code 07480, and the court's page for that building lists Danville among the places it serves. The courthouse on your reminder notice is the one handling your case, and the court answers at (925) 608-1000.

On town streets, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff, which has run the Danville Police Department under contract since 1982. On Interstate 680, the California Highway Patrol, whose Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve the county. The court's rules decide traffic school either way, so call the police about the stop and the court about your case.

No. Traffic school is for moving violations, and the California courts' self-help guide lists equipment problems, like a broken taillight, among tickets that do not qualify. For a fix-it ticket, make the repair and ask the Danville Police Department at 500 La Gonda Way to sign off the correction, which an officer does when one is available. The department does not sign off insurance violations, which go to the court with proof. Parking tickets are not court cases, and the town takes parking appeals in writing.

Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, with the final exam included. The court's fine and its traffic school fee are separate, paid to Contra Costa County Superior Court, and your reminder notice shows both amounts.

On the due date in the court's reminder notice, which also says whether you are eligible. Work from that date, and handle the ticket on time even if no notice arrives. A missed date can bring a civil assessment and a referral to the court's collection agency.

Mirai Traffic School enters your completion in the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and Contra Costa County Superior Court receives an electronic certificate from it. The court still asks you to confirm it arrived, so look up your Danville case before the due date and keep Mirai Traffic School's confirmation with your ticket.
