Sonoma County traffic tickets and the courthouse in Santa Rosa

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Sonoma County.

Sonoma County reaches from Petaluma, by the Marin County line, north past Cloverdale, and from the Pacific east to Napa County. US 101 is its spine, through Petaluma, Cotati, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg and Cloverdale. State Route 116 follows the Russian River in from the coast to Guerneville, then turns inland through Sebastopol to Cotati. State Route 1 hugs the shore from Bodega Bay to Sea Ranch, and State Route 128 crosses the north toward Calistoga. The Census Bureau counts 486,444 residents in nine incorporated cities and towns.

The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 2,438 people killed or injured in Sonoma County crashes in 2023, placing the county 26th of 58, where 1st is the worst record. Two groups rank worse than the county as a whole. Motorcycle crashes killed or injured 137 people, 17th in California, and 94 bicyclists were killed or injured, 18th.

Every location Sonoma County Superior Court lists is in Santa Rosa. It names one place for adult traffic, the Traffic Division at the Hall of Justice, 625 Administration Drive, so a ticket from Cloverdale or Petaluma ends up there too. The court announced that its traffic clerk's office would open in this new building on July 20, 2026. Court letters printed before the move give the Hall of Justice as 600 Administration Drive, and three traffic school websites we checked still do. Mail and visits go to 625. The California Highway Patrol's Santa Rosa Area serves most of the county and its Marin and Napa Areas cover some roads, so a CHP ticket lands at the same Traffic Division as one from a city police officer.

The DMV's court code list gives this court three Santa Rosa codes: 49460 labelled traffic, 49200 labelled juvenile, and 49100, which carries only the court's name. Enroll with the court and code on your citation or court paperwork. Drivers under 18 do not go to the Juvenile Justice Center on Rancho Los Guilicos Road, whose page lists only delinquency and dependency cases. Juvenile Traffic works from the Hall of Justice at (707) 521-6681, and a parent or legal guardian must come to any required appearance.

The court mails a Reminder Notice to the address on your citation. If none arrives, call the Traffic Division at (707) 521-6680. To elect traffic school, you pay the court the total due with traffic school on that notice, which includes a non-refundable administrative fee. The court then mails the traffic school forms and a copy of the DMV's list of licensed schools.

The court's traffic page says it puts no case information online, so to check on a case, call the Traffic Division or research it in person at the Hall of Justice.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Sonoma County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

To the Traffic Division at the Hall of Justice in Santa Rosa, which takes adult traffic from the whole county. Call (707) 521-6680 for information, or (707) 521-6587 about traffic school. Serious charges such as reckless driving or driving under the influence go to the court's Criminal Division instead. From US 101, the court's directions use the Steele Lane exit southbound and Bicentennial northbound.

The first goes to the court. It is the total due with traffic school on your Reminder Notice, and the court refunds none of it. The second goes to the school, which charges its own fee when you enroll, and Mirai Traffic School charges $24.99 for the full course and final exam. If you cannot pay the court in full, call (707) 521-6587 about options, or ask the court to consider your ability to pay.

The court sets a due date rather than a number of days, so find it in your court paperwork. Miss it and the court forfeits the bail, closes the case and reports a conviction to the DMV. The court extends the appearance or payment date on most citations, but it states no rule for moving the traffic school date.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School, and your Reminder Notice says whether the citation qualifies. Sonoma County asks for a valid license, no traffic school in the past 18 months, counted from violation date to violation date, a speed no more than 25 mph over the limit, and a violation outside a commercial vehicle. Commercial license holders who were not driving a commercial vehicle can attend, but the court says the DMV will not keep that conviction confidential.

The court keeps no list of its own. Its traffic page lets you attend any classroom or internet school on the DMV's statewide list. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the California DMV as E0756, which puts our course on that list.

The court's traffic page warns of a civil assessment, a hold or suspension on your license and a possible arrest warrant when a citation is not handled by its due date. Once a case reaches collections, the court says to call Court Collections at (707) 521-6659 to clear it.

Mirai Traffic School teaches every lesson in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. For a hearing, ask the court for an interpreter as early as you can, because it says a case may be delayed or continued until one is assigned. The interpreter coordinators at the Hall of Justice answer at (707) 521-6652.
