Traffic tickets and traffic court in Solano County

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Solano County.

Solano County sits between the Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley, and most of its traffic funnels onto a few roads. Interstate 80 runs the length of the county through Vallejo, Fairfield, Vacaville and Dixon. Interstate 680 crosses the Benicia-Martinez Bridge into Benicia, and Interstate 780 links Benicia to Vallejo. State Route 12 runs from Rio Vista through Suisun City toward Napa, State Route 37 follows the edge of San Pablo Bay out of Vallejo, and State Route 113 heads north from Highway 12 through Dixon. The Census Bureau counts 455,376 residents across seven cities.

The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 2,868 people killed or injured in Solano County crashes in 2023, which ranks the county 16th of California's 58 counties. In these rankings, 1st is the worst result. Two figures stand out. Hit-and-run crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 278, 4th in the state, and speed-related ones numbered 657, 11th. Speed matters for traffic school here as well, because Solano County Superior Court will not allow it for a driver cited at more than 25 mph over the posted limit.

When the court allows traffic school, it sets its own fee and the date by which you must finish, and your courtesy notice shows both. Starting on time matters as much as finishing. The court says a driver who does not ask for traffic school on time cannot ask for it later, so act on the notice when it arrives rather than near the due date. The California Highway Patrol's Solano Area serves residents and travelers across the county, so a ticket from a CHP officer on Interstate 80 or State Route 12 lands in the same Superior Court as one from a city police officer.

Adult traffic cases are heard in two cities. In Fairfield, the Hall of Justice at 600 Union Avenue holds traffic arraignments and trials, and the Law and Justice Center at 530 Union Avenue calls a traffic arraignment calendar of its own. In Vallejo, the Solano Justice Building at 321 Tuolumne Street hears traffic arraignments and trials. Your citation names the courthouse that has your case. Citations for drivers under 18 go through the county Probation Department instead of a traffic courtroom.

Mirai Traffic School's office is at 2551 Lavender Place in Fairfield, which makes this the one county page where we can say we are local. The course itself is online and self-paced, so you can stop, come back later and take the final exam when you are ready. After you pass, we report your completion to the DMV electronically and the court retrieves it from there, so keep your confirmation until your case shows as closed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Solano County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Solano County Superior Court. Adult traffic matters are heard at the Hall of Justice and the Law and Justice Center on Union Avenue in Fairfield, and at the Solano Justice Building on Tuolumne Street in Vallejo. The citation, not your home address, decides which one. Your courtesy notice names the assigned location, and the Fairfield clerk answers at (707) 207-7360.

Two separate payments. The court charges its own traffic school fee on top of the bail, and your courtesy notice shows the amount and the date to pay it. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us, and it covers the whole course and the final exam. If paying the court is hard, you can ask it to consider your ability to pay.

The court sets the date, and your courtesy notice shows it. The court also says that a driver who misses the deadline to ask for traffic school cannot request it at a later date, so ask early and finish the course well before the date on your notice.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. Solano County asks for a valid driver's license, no traffic school election in the 18 months before, counted from violation date to violation date, no outstanding failure to appear or failure to pay, and a moving infraction with no drug or alcohol violation. Drivers cited at more than 25 mph over the limit, or while driving a commercial vehicle, are not eligible.

Solano County keeps no list of its own. Its traffic school page sends drivers to the DMV's online locator to find a licensed school. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the California DMV as E0756, so it is on the list the court points to.

We report your completion to the DMV electronically after you pass, and Solano County Superior Court retrieves the electronic certificate from there. You do not need to mail anything or bring it to a courthouse.

Mirai Traffic School teaches the whole course in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. If you go to court instead, Solano County says interpreter services are available in all case types, traffic included, and you can ask court staff for one.
