What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Sacramento County.

Sacramento County stretches from the Delta towns on the Sacramento River to the foothills around Folsom and Rancho Murieta. Interstate 5 runs north and south through downtown Sacramento and past Elk Grove toward San Joaquin County. Interstate 80 crosses the north side of the city between Yolo and Placer counties, and US 50 runs east through Rancho Cordova and Folsom into El Dorado County. State Route 99 heads south through Elk Grove and Galt. On the rural edges, Route 16 runs east past Rancho Murieta and Route 160 follows the river past Walnut Grove and Isleton. The Census Bureau counts 1,618,460 residents, many of them outside the seven cities, in places such as Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Fair Oaks and Orangevale.

The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 11,407 people killed or injured in Sacramento County crashes in 2023, placing the county 27th of California's 58 counties. OTS gives rank 1 to the county with the worst result. That total sits in the middle of the table, but the figures for people outside a car do not. Crashes killed or injured 529 bicyclists, 4th in the state, and 653 pedestrians, 7th.

Adult and juvenile traffic infractions from across the county are heard in one building, the Carol Miller Justice Center at 301 Bicentennial Circle in Sacramento. It houses the court's Traffic Division and its public counter, and the court's traffic contact page lists the counter's current hours. The traffic call center answers at (916) 669-5712. Most DUI cases take a different route, and the court handles them at the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse downtown. The CHP's North Sacramento, South Sacramento and East Sacramento Areas patrol the county, and their tickets reach the same Traffic Division as tickets from sheriff's deputies and city police.

When the court grants traffic school, you pay the full bail, any required proof of correction fees and an administrative fee that the court does not refund. The court sets one due date for both the payment and the course and prints it on your Agreement to Attend Traffic Violator School, which you can find through its case search. It allows no extensions or partial payments, and if either the payment or the course comes in late, the point goes on your DMV record.

Ask the court for traffic school before you start any course. The court warns that a driver who attends without being eligible still gets the conviction reported, with no refund of fees paid. The court says all certificates of completion reach it electronically. If a point still shows up later, the court suggests checking that the name, date of birth, citation number and case number you gave the school are accurate, since the school may then resubmit the certificate.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Sacramento County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

The Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle, Sacramento, CA 95826. The court lists no other traffic courthouse, so a ticket written in Galt, Folsom or Citrus Heights ends up at the same counter. Before a visit, check the counter hours on the court's contact page, or call the traffic call center at (916) 669-5712.

Two separate payments. The court collects the full bail, any required proof of correction fees and its own administrative fee, which it does not refund. The court sets the amounts, and your Agreement to Attend Traffic Violator School shows the due date. Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is a separate payment to us for the course and the final exam.

Not more time. The court allows no extensions or partial payments on a traffic school case. A driver who cannot afford the fine can ask for a reduction, or for community service through the Alternative Sentencing Program, based on ability to pay. The court cannot order both that program and traffic school on the same case.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. Its list calls for a valid non-commercial license, no commercial vehicle, no traffic school sign-up in California in the 18 months before the ticket date, and a moving violation that carries a DMV point. Alcohol, drugs, a misdemeanor, a mandatory appearance or Vehicle Code Section 22406.5 rule a ticket out. A failure to appear must be resolved and paid first, and a missed date can add a civil assessment.

The court keeps no school list of its own. Its FAQ says the eligible traffic school list is maintained by the California DMV. Mirai Traffic School holds DMV license E0756, so you will find it on that list.

Sacramento County routes juvenile Vehicle Code infractions to the same Traffic Division at the Carol Miller Justice Center. The young driver has to appear with a parent or legal guardian. Juvenile traffic misdemeanors go to the Juvenile Courthouse at 9605 Kiefer Boulevard instead.

Mirai Traffic School's course, final exam included, comes in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. For hearings, the court says court interpreter services are free in all case types, and it asks you to request one early from its Interpreter's Office at (916) 874-8455.
