Important

The court decides whether you are eligible for traffic school. Mirai Traffic School cannot approve or guarantee eligibility. Check your courtesy notice, or ask Placer County Superior Court, if you are unsure.

Placer County traffic court, from Roseville to Tahoe City

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Placer County.

Placer County reaches from the edge of the Sacramento Valley over the Sierra Nevada to the north shore of Lake Tahoe, and its two traffic courthouses sit near opposite ends. Interstate 80 is the spine, climbing from Roseville through Rocklin, Loomis and Auburn to Colfax. State Route 65 leaves Interstate 80 in Roseville and heads north through Rocklin to Lincoln. On the Tahoe side, State Route 89 runs south from Truckee into Tahoe City. The Census Bureau counts 442,081 residents in a county with six incorporated cities.

The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 2,277 people killed or injured in Placer County crashes in 2023, which ranks the county 50th of California's 58. In these rankings 1st is the worst result, so Placer sits near the better end overall. Young cyclists are the exception. OTS counted 16 children under 15 killed or injured on bicycles, 10th in the state, and 84 bicyclists of all ages, 32nd.

When the court allows traffic school, you pay the fine plus the administrative fee the court sets, and the court's traffic school page shows the amount. Each case gets its own completion due date, and the certificate has to reach the court by then. Miss it, and the court warns of a conviction reported to the DMV, a point on your record, a referral to county Revenue Services and a hold on your driving record. The CHP's Auburn, Gold Run and Truckee Areas patrol the county, and their tickets go to the same Superior Court as tickets from city police.

Adult traffic goes to two buildings. The Gibson Courthouse at 10820 Justice Center Drive in Roseville is the court's main courthouse, and it hears traffic cases. The Tahoe City Courthouse at 2501 N. Lake Blvd hears traffic too, but the court's traffic page describes its traffic schedule in two different ways. Call the Tahoe clerk at (530) 584-3460 before you make the drive. A driver cited as a minor must appear with a guardian, and the judge decides at that hearing whether traffic school is allowed.

Two other court sites are not traffic locations. The Historic Courthouse at 101 Maple Street in Auburn does not appear on the traffic page, and the temporary courtroom in Rocklin hears only pretrial motions, civil trials and long cause family law hearings. You may see the Roseville courthouse called the Bill Santucci Justice Center, a name the court's own FAQ still uses. Placer has one DMV court code, 31455, filed under the Roseville court on the CTSI list, and the Tahoe City Courthouse has none of its own. No district attorney or public defender sits in a Placer traffic courtroom.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Placer County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Placer County Superior Court hears traffic at the Gibson Courthouse in Roseville, (916) 408-6000, and at the Tahoe City Courthouse, (530) 584-3460. Your citation or bail notice tells you which. The court warns that a bail notice is a courtesy you may never receive, and when one shows a different date from the citation, the bail notice date is the official one.

Plan on two payments. The court collects the fine plus its own administrative fee, and its traffic school page shows the amount. You pay Mirai Traffic School $24.99 separately, and that covers every lesson and the final exam. If you cannot afford the court's amount, you can ask for a lower fine, more time to pay or community service, on the court's Can't Afford to Pay form or at your court date.

The court gives your case a completion due date, and the certificate must reach the court by then. The court's extension rule covers court dates, not the course, and a continuance takes a written request at the clerk's office. Ask the clerk before the due date if you need more time to finish.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. Its page asks that you have not completed traffic school within 18 months of receiving the current citation, that any speeding charge is no more than 25 mph over the cited safe speed, and that the violation did not happen in a commercial vehicle. Alcohol, drug and two-point charges are excluded, as are hit and run, reckless driving and DUI. After a missed pay or appear date, you must first pay all fees and civil assessments or get the judge's authorization in court. The page contradicts itself on commercial licenses, so ask the clerk if you hold one.

The court names two sources and lets you choose from either. One is the DMV's search of licensed schools. The other is the Placer County list on the website of the California Traffic Safety Institute, CTSI, and that list shows Mirai Traffic School as E0756 for internet courses. The court's traffic school page links to both.

Once you pass, we report your completion to the DMV electronically. Placer County does not publish how long the court needs to see it, but its traffic school page links a check that shows whether the court received the certificate. Check before your due date and keep your confirmation.

Mirai Traffic School teaches every lesson in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. For a hearing, Placer County provides court interpreters at no cost in traffic cases. Ask the clerk or courtroom staff well before the hearing, because a request on the hearing day can mean a wait or a later date.
