Auburn roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Auburn.

The Census Bureau estimates 13,847 residents in Auburn on July 1, 2025. The California Highway Patrol names Interstate 80 and State Route 49 as the two major highways that intersect the city. City Hall is at 1225 Lincoln Way.

Tickets in Auburn come from two agencies. The Auburn Police Department patrols city streets such as Lincoln Way. The California Highway Patrol's Auburn Area handles traffic and collision work in the unincorporated parts of Placer County and on the corridors it calls key, Interstate 80 and State Routes 65 and 49. Whichever agency writes the ticket, it goes to Placer County Superior Court, and the court applies one set of traffic school rules.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 63 people killed or injured in Auburn crashes, 18th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Alcohol was involved for 12 of those victims, 16th in the group, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 13, 19th. Five pedestrians were killed or injured, 26th, and three bicyclists, 43rd. These counts describe the city's roads as a whole and say nothing about fault in one driver's case.

In May 2026 the City Council adopted two plans for safer streets. The Active Transportation Plan lays out a network of trails, bike lanes and sidewalks for people who walk, bicycle, roll by wheelchair or ride scooters in and near Auburn. The Comprehensive Safety Action Plan aims to reduce and eliminate serious injury and fatal crashes for all road users. The city calls the plans the first step toward grant funding and construction, and says they do not commit it to building every project.

Adult traffic tickets from Auburn are heard in Roseville, not in town. Placer County Superior Court hears traffic at the Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse, 10820 Justice Center Drive, under DMV court code 31455, and the clerk answers at (916) 408-6000. The CHP still lists the building as the Santucci Justice Center, its older name. Auburn's Historic Courthouse at 101 Maple Street is a court building, but the court's traffic page names only the Gibson Courthouse and the Tahoe City Courthouse for traffic. Your citation and bail notice name the courthouse for your case.

Traffic school is something you ask the court for. The court requires the fine plus its own administrative fee before you sign up, and it sets the date to finish. A bail notice shows both, but the court warns that the notice is a courtesy you may never receive, so check your case with the court or call the clerk. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Placer's list of conditions reads: no traffic school within 18 months of the current citation, no more than 25 mph over the safe speed, and no commercial vehicle. Alcohol or drug charges and two-point violations are not eligible. The court makes the final decision.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court must receive your certificate by your completion due date, and its traffic school page has a link to check that it arrived. Before that date, make sure your name, license number and court code 31455 match, so there is time to fix a mismatch. The court says that a driver who pleads guilty and finishes by the deadline gets no point on the driving record.

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Auburn citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Placer County Superior Court, at the Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse, 10820 Justice Center Drive in Roseville, code 31455. The Historic Courthouse on Maple Street in Auburn is not on the court's traffic page. Go by the courthouse printed on your citation, and call the clerk at (916) 408-6000 if anything is unclear.

$24.99 for the online course, final exam included. The fine and the court's administrative fee are separate payments to Placer County Superior Court, and the court sets both. Pay the court first, then enroll. A course receipt does not show that the court was paid or that it granted traffic school.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 63 people killed or injured in 2023, 18th of 103 similar cities. Victims in alcohol-involved crashes numbered 12, 16th, motorcyclists 6, 21st, and speed-related fatal or injury collisions 13, 19th. The figures describe conditions across Auburn, not fault or eligibility in a single case.

By the completion due date Placer County Superior Court sets. A bail notice shows that date when one arrives, and the court treats the bail notice date as official, so check your case or call the clerk if nothing comes. Miss your pay or appear date and the court says you are not eligible until you pay all fees or a judge allows it.

Mirai Traffic School reports it electronically through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and the court retrieves it there. The court's traffic school page lets you check that your certificate arrived. Keep Mirai Traffic School's confirmation with your Auburn citation number.

The Auburn Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Auburn Area on Interstate 80, State Route 49 and the county's unincorporated roads. Both send tickets to Placer County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules stay the same whoever stopped you.
