Davis roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Davis.

The Census Bureau estimates 66,110 residents in Davis on July 1, 2025. Interstate 80 and State Route 113 cross the city, and Covell Boulevard is one of the local streets shown on the map. By the city's own count, Davis has 169 miles of roads, 102 miles of bike lanes and 63 miles of pathways, and 75 percent of its roads have a posted limit of 25 mph.

Tickets in Davis come mainly from two agencies. The Davis Police Department patrols city streets such as Covell Boulevard. The California Highway Patrol's Woodland Area patrols over 1,000 miles of highways and unincorporated roads in Yolo County, and Interstate 80 and State Route 113 are among the routes it covers. On campus, the city works with the UC Davis Police Department to give students stopped at night without a bike light a light instead of a citation. The tickets that are written go to Yolo County Superior Court, which applies the same traffic school rules whoever wrote them.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 171 people killed or injured in Davis crashes, 67th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Bicyclists are the exception, with 30 killed or injured, 10th in the group. Pedestrians numbered 17, 46th, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 36, 42nd. The figures describe the city's roads as a whole, not fault in any one driver's case.

Davis adopted a Vision Zero resolution in May 2023. Its goals include ending traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2035 and reducing vehicle speeds and collisions between people driving, riding bikes, scooting and walking. The draft Local Road Safety Plan studies 12 years of injury collision data, from 2009 through 2020, to find where collisions cluster and which projects to build first. Bicycle planning goes back further, since the city adopted its Beyond Platinum Bicycle Action Plan in 2014.

Every adult traffic ticket from Davis goes to Woodland. Yolo County Superior Court lists a single courthouse, at 1000 Main Street, which it built in 2015 with 14 courtrooms to replace seven separate facilities. Its Traffic Division uses DMV court code 57420 and answers at (530) 406-6702. The officer writes the due date and the court location at the top of your citation, and if a website shows an older Woodland court address, go by the citation.

Yolo requires the court's permission and its traffic school administration fee before you start a course, and it rejects a completion from anyone who skips that step. You pay the full amount on your courtesy notice plus the court's fee, and the court sets both. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. The court lists six conditions: no traffic school in the past 18 months, a citation that is not alcohol related, a valid license with no outstanding failure to appear or failure to pay, less than 26 mph over the posted limit, no commercial vehicle, and a moving violation. Seatbelt, registration and insurance tickets do not count as moving violations.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Before the date the court set, check your case with the Traffic Division and confirm that your name, license number and court code 57420 match, so a mismatch can be fixed in time. If you need an interpreter in court, the court provides one at no cost in traffic cases, and its language access plan names Russian as the county's most spoken non-English language after Spanish.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Davis citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Yolo County Superior Court, at its Traffic Division, 1000 Main Street in Woodland, code 57420. It is the one courthouse the court lists, so Davis tickets go there whoever wrote them. If anything on your citation is unclear, call the Traffic Division at (530) 406-6702.

$24.99 for the online course, with the final exam. The bail on your courtesy notice and the court's administration fee are separate payments to Yolo County Superior Court, and the court sets both. Get the court's permission and pay the court first, then enroll. A course receipt does not prove the court was paid or gave permission.

OTS counts 171 people killed or injured in 2023, 67th of 103 similar cities. Bicyclists numbered 30, 10th in the group, pedestrians 17, 46th, and pedestrians aged 65 and over 4, 23rd. Speed-related fatal or injury collisions numbered 36, 42nd. The figures describe Davis as a whole, not fault or eligibility in one case.

By the dates Yolo County Superior Court sets. The first is the pay or appear date the officer writes at the top of your citation. If a judicial officer grants traffic school at arraignment, the court then gives you a date to pay the fine and fee and a later date to finish the course. Work from those dates, not from the day of the stop in Davis.

Mirai Traffic School reports it electronically through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and the court retrieves it there. The court accepts it only when you had permission and paid the fee before starting. Keep Mirai Traffic School's confirmation with your Davis citation number.

The Davis Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Woodland Area on Interstate 80, State Route 113 and the county's unincorporated roads. Both send tickets to Yolo County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules stay the same whichever agency stopped you.
