Sacramento roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Sacramento.

The Census Bureau estimates 536,449 residents in Sacramento on July 1, 2025, by far the largest city in Sacramento County. Four major highways meet here. Interstate 5 and State Route 99 run north and south, Interstate 80 and US 50 run east and west, and shorter state routes numbered 16, 51, 160, 244 and 275 also cross the city.

Tickets in Sacramento come from two agencies. The Sacramento Police Department patrols city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento, South Sacramento and East Sacramento Areas serve Sacramento County, including the freeways through the city. A ticket from either one goes to Sacramento County Superior Court, and its traffic school rules are the same for both.

Sacramento's crash numbers are among the worst of California's large cities. The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings put the city in a group of 15 cities, where 1st is the worst result, and count 4,214 people killed or injured, 2nd of 15. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 745, 1st in the group, and alcohol-involved crashes killed or injured 454 people, also 1st. Crashes killed or injured 297 pedestrians, 4th, and 237 bicyclists, 3rd.

The city has answered with Vision Zero. On January 19, 2017, the City Council set a goal of ending traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2027, and in 2018 it adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan with more than 40 safety actions. The plan names the streets with the most deaths and injuries as a high injury network, and the city publishes a Vision Zero crash dashboard so residents can see where, how and why crashes happen.

Adult traffic tickets from Sacramento go to the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle, which hears adult and juvenile traffic infractions for Sacramento County Superior Court under DMV court code 34470. The court's traffic call center is (916) 669-5712. Parking tickets are a different matter. The court's Traffic Division does not handle them, so you pay or contest a parking ticket with the agency named on it.

You ask the court for traffic school, and it decides. It looks for a valid non-commercial license, a moving violation that carries a DMV point and no traffic school sign-up in California in the 18 months before the ticket date. Alcohol, drugs, a misdemeanor, a commercial vehicle charge, a required court appearance or a charge under Vehicle Code Section 22406.5 rule a ticket out. When the court agrees, it collects full bail, any proof of correction fees and an administrative fee it does not refund, apart from Mirai Traffic School's $24.99.

One due date then covers both the course and the court payment, and the court allows no extensions or partial payments. Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. If you need an interpreter for a hearing, the court provides one free in every case type. Ask its Interpreter's Office at (916) 874-8455 as early as you can.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Sacramento citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Sacramento County Superior Court's Traffic Division at the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle, code 34470. That is where a Sacramento Police Department or CHP ticket goes, not the downtown criminal courthouse. Check the court and date on your citation, and call the traffic call center at (916) 669-5712 with questions.

$24.99 for the online course, final exam included. The court's full bail, any proof of correction fees and its administrative fee are separate payments that the court sets and collects. Keep the two apart, because a course receipt does not show that the court was paid or that it granted traffic school.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 4,214 people killed or injured, 2nd of 15 large cities. Speed-related fatal or injury collisions numbered 745 and alcohol-involved victims 454, both 1st, with 297 pedestrians, 4th, and 237 bicyclists, 3rd. The figures describe the city's streets, not fault or eligibility in one case.

By the due date the court sets when it grants traffic school. That one date covers the course and the payment to the court, and Sacramento County Superior Court allows no extensions or partial payments. If either one is late, the point goes on your DMV record.

Yes, in two places. Mirai Traffic School's course and final exam come in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. For hearings, Sacramento County Superior Court provides court interpreters free of charge, and it asks you to request one early.

The Sacramento Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento, South Sacramento and East Sacramento Areas across Sacramento County. Both send tickets to Sacramento County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules do not depend on who stopped you.
