What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Yolo County.

Yolo County runs from the ridges on the Lake and Napa county lines east to the Sacramento River. Interstate 80 crosses its southern end from Solano County through Davis and West Sacramento into Sacramento. Interstate 5 comes in from Colusa County past Dunnigan to Woodland, and Interstate 505 splits off near Dunnigan to head south past Winters. State Route 113 connects Woodland and Davis, State Route 16 brings traffic from Rumsey, Guinda and Esparto into Woodland, and State Route 84 runs south out of West Sacramento. The Census Bureau counts 224,410 residents, and the county has four cities: Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento and Winters.

The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 1,250 people killed or injured in Yolo County crashes in 2023, 13th of California's 58 counties. A rank of 1st would be the worst in the state. The numbers that stand out belong to people outside a car. Crashes killed or injured 69 bicyclists, 5th in the state, and 69 pedestrians, 8th. Davis weighs heavily in the bicycle count, with 30 bicyclists killed or injured there in the OTS city table for the same year.

All of those roads lead to one building. The court lists a single courthouse, 1000 Main Street in Woodland, built in 2015 with 14 courtrooms to replace seven separate court facilities. The CHP's Woodland Area patrols the county's highways and unincorporated roads, so a CHP ticket on Interstate 5 at Dunnigan and a city police ticket in Davis both go to the Traffic Division there, at (530) 406-6702. If a website gives you another Woodland court address, go by your citation and the court's contact page. Drivers under 18 go to the same Traffic Division, and the court requires them to appear with a parent or legal guardian.

Traffic school starts with the court's permission. Its adult traffic page warns that the court rejects the completion of a driver who attends without that permission or without paying the state-mandated administration fee. To ask, pay the bail on your courtesy notice plus the court's administrative fee at the clerk's office, or mail the request to Traffic Violator School at the courthouse. The court sets that fee, and its traffic page gives the current amount.

You can also ask in the courtroom. At your arraignment, ask the judicial officer for traffic school. If it is granted, the court's advisement of rights sets one date to pay the fine and administrative fee and another to finish the course. Miss the payment and traffic school is gone, the offense shows as a conviction on your driving record and the court adds a penalty.

The court's language access plan names Spanish, Russian, Punjabi, Dari and Mandarin as the top five non-English languages spoken in the county. Mirai Traffic School teaches the whole course in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian, which covers the first two languages on that list.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Yolo County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

At the Traffic Division of Yolo County Superior Court, 1000 Main Street, Woodland, CA 95695. It is the one courthouse in the county, so a ticket from Davis, West Sacramento, Winters or an unincorporated town goes there too. The traffic line is (530) 406-6702.

Two payments. The court takes the full bail printed on your courtesy notice plus its own court administrative fee, and its traffic page gives the current fee. Mirai Traffic School charges $24.99 for the course, and that payment comes to us. If paying the court would be a financial hardship, you can ask it to consider your ability to pay.

The court sets the dates. If a judicial officer grants traffic school at your arraignment, the court's advisement sets one date to pay the fine and fee and another to finish the course, and a late payment costs you traffic school. If you do not respond to the citation by its date, the court may add a civil assessment and place a hold on your license with the DMV, so call the Traffic Division before a date passes.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. Yolo County asks for no traffic school in the past 18 months, a citation that is not alcohol related, a valid driver's license with no outstanding failure to appear or failure to pay, a speed under 26 mph over the posted limit, no commercial vehicle, and a moving violation, which seatbelt, registration and insurance tickets are not. A driver who loses at trial may still qualify, at the judge's discretion.

The court's traffic pages send drivers to the DMV's statewide list of licensed schools, and Mirai Traffic School is on it, licensed by the California DMV as E0756. Once you have paid, the court also gives you its own lists of schools.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically after you pass the final exam. Yolo County Superior Court does not say how long it takes to see it, so keep your confirmation and call the Traffic Division if your case still looks open near your date.

Mirai Traffic School teaches the whole course in all three, and in English. In court, Yolo County provides a qualified interpreter at no cost in a traffic case on request. Ask ahead of the hearing. Spanish requests need less notice than other languages, which must be asked for in writing. The interpreter coordinator answers questions at (530) 406-6708.
