Lake County ranks 8th for alcohol crashes, and adult tickets go to Clearlake

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Lake County.

Lake County had 67,772 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 68,162 in 2020. State Route 29 runs down the west side of Clear Lake past Lakeport and Kelseyville, State Route 20 follows the north shore through Lucerne, and State Route 175 climbs over the hills at Cobb. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 443 people killed or injured in county crashes, 33rd of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Alcohol-involved crashes rank 8th, with 107 victims, and crashes where a driver under 21 had been drinking rank 3rd.

Adult traffic infractions are heard at the Clearlake Branch at 7000-A South Center Drive, where a court commissioner hears them and holds traffic court trials. The Lakeport courthouse is the court's main building, yet its list of cases has no traffic infractions in it. The California Highway Patrol's Clear Lake Area covers every state highway in the county and its unincorporated roads, so a ticket from a CHP officer on State Route 53 reaches the same Clearlake court as one from a city police officer.

Traffic school in Lake County begins with a payment. The court signs you up once you pay the fine together with its administrative fee, and your courtesy notice shows the amount and the date it is due. Your time to finish is counted from that payment. If proof of completion reaches the court after the due date, the court reports a conviction to the DMV and a point is added to your driving record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Lake County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Two payments. The court charges your fine plus its own administrative fee, and your courtesy notice shows the amount. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If you want traffic school but cannot pay the court in full, the court asks for form TR-320 with its traffic school addendum instead of its online fine reduction tool.

Pay the fine and the court's administrative fee by the due date on your courtesy notice. The payment is the request. The court's traffic page lists the ways to pay, and the Traffic Division answers questions at (707) 994-6598.

The court sets the time, counted from the day it receives your payment. Check it on your courtesy notice and the court's traffic page, and finish well ahead of the due date.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You qualify only if you have not attended traffic school for a violation within 18 months of this one. Alcohol and drug offenses and two-point violations are excluded, and so is a commercial driver cited in a commercial vehicle.

The DMV's list of licensed traffic schools, which the court links from its traffic page. Mirai Traffic School holds DMV license E0756.

The driver appears for a hearing at the Lake County Probation Department and can ask for traffic school there. The hearing officer decides whether the driver may attend.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The court provides a certified interpreter where the law requires one. In other cases, ask ahead on form INT-300 and call the court before your court date to confirm an interpreter will be there.
