Rocklin roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Rocklin.
The Census Bureau estimates 76,821 residents in Rocklin on July 1, 2025. Interstate 80 runs through the city, and the California Highway Patrol describes State Route 65 as the road leading north from it that gives travelers access to Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln. By the city's own count, Rocklin has over 500 miles of roadway, 1,500 stop sign intersections and 72 large intersections with traffic lights.
Tickets in Rocklin come from two agencies. The Rocklin Police Department, at 4080 Rocklin Road, has a Traffic Unit that takes residents' reports of ongoing traffic problems and unsafe driving. The California Highway Patrol's Auburn Area investigates traffic collisions in unincorporated Placer County and counts Interstate 80 and State Route 65 among its key corridors. Both agencies file their tickets with Placer County Superior Court, and its traffic school rules do not depend on which one stopped you.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 190 people killed or injured in Rocklin crashes, 75th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Bicyclists stand out, with 18 killed or injured, 47th, and 7 of them under 15, a figure that ranks 10th in the group. Pedestrians numbered 12, 75th, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone 31, 63rd. The figures describe the city's roads as a whole, not fault in any one driver's case.
The Traffic Unit works with the City Engineering Department to gather traffic data where residents have complained. Its survey equipment records volume, speeds and the times of violations, and officers are deployed based on the results. Residents can also ask for a radar trailer that shows drivers their speed. Some trailers record speed data, but the city says the data is anonymous and is not used to cite drivers. Rocklin sets speed limits by the Caltrans method, which posts the limit at the nearest 5 mph step to the speed that 85 percent of drivers travel at or below, and the limit may be lowered where there is a history of collisions.
Rocklin has a court site of its own, but not for traffic. The court's temporary courtroom at the Placer County Elections Office, 3715 Atherton Road, hears only pretrial motions, civil trials and long family law hearings, and it has no clerk's office services. Traffic tickets from Rocklin go to Placer County Superior Court at the Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse, 10820 Justice Center Drive in Roseville, under DMV court code 31455. The clerk can be reached at (916) 408-6000. The court also hears traffic in Tahoe City, so follow the courthouse on your citation and bail notice.
To get traffic school, pay the fine and the court's administrative fee, then ask the court. The amount of that fee and the date to finish come from the court, and a bail notice shows them if one comes. The court warns that one may never come, so check your case yourself. Mirai Traffic School's course costs a separate $24.99. Placer allows traffic school when you have not completed it within 18 months of the current citation, were no more than 25 mph over the safe speed and were not in a commercial vehicle. Alcohol or drug charges and two-point violations do not qualify. The decision belongs to the court.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Your certificate must reach the court by your completion due date, and the court's traffic school page links to a status check so you can see it arrived. Look over your name, license number and court code 31455 before the deadline to leave time for a correction. If you do not finish by the due date, the court says you may face a conviction reported to the DMV, a point on your driving record, a referral to Revenue Services and a hold on your driving record.
