Folsom roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Folsom.

The Census Bureau estimates 91,983 residents in Folsom on July 1, 2025, up from 80,463 on April 1, 2020. US 50 crosses the city on its way east to El Dorado County, and East Bidwell Street and Folsom Boulevard carry much of the local traffic to and from the freeway.

Tickets in Folsom come from two directions. The Folsom Police Department patrols city streets such as East Bidwell Street, and the California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento, South Sacramento and East Sacramento Areas serve Sacramento County, including US 50. Both kinds of ticket land at Sacramento County Superior Court, which applies one set of traffic school rules no matter who wrote the citation.

In the California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings, Folsom crashes killed or injured 303 people, placing the city 62nd of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Motorcycles are the number to notice. Crashes killed or injured 26 motorcyclists, 15th in the group, and speed-related crashes that hurt or killed someone numbered 65, 23rd. Pedestrians fared better, with 12 killed or injured, 89th, and bicyclists with 16, 73rd.

Folsom adopted its current Local Road Safety Plan in 2024, drawn up with residents, city staff, public safety workers and transportation experts. It uses crash data to find high-risk areas and names the fixes the city is after, including better routes for people on foot and on bikes, retimed traffic signals, and clearer signs and road markings. A city Traffic Safety Committee, set up under Section 10.02.010 of the municipal code, advises the city council on traffic safety and hears residents' concerns. In 2021, Caltrans also funded signal and intersection safety work at several Folsom locations through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program.

A ticket written in Folsom is handled by Sacramento County Superior Court at the Carol Miller Justice Center, 301 Bicentennial Circle in Sacramento, which hears adult and juvenile traffic infractions under DMV court code 34470. The court's traffic call center is (916) 669-5712. The officer writes a court date on your ticket, and the court expects the case resolved on or before that date, so plan around it.

You can ask for traffic school any time on or before that date, and the court decides. It looks for a valid non-commercial license, a moving violation that carries a DMV point, and no traffic school sign-up in California in the 18 months before the ticket date. Tickets involving alcohol or drugs, or a charge under Vehicle Code Section 22406.5, do not qualify. When the court says yes, it collects full bail, any proof of correction fees and an administrative fee it does not refund, apart from Mirai Traffic School's $24.99.

Wait for the court's answer before you start. The court warns that a driver who attends without being eligible still has the conviction reported, and gets no refund of fees paid. Once you are granted traffic school, one due date covers both the court payment and the course, and the court allows no extensions or partial payments. Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Folsom citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Sacramento County Superior Court. Its Carol Miller Justice Center at 301 Bicentennial Circle in Sacramento, code 34470, hears traffic infractions, and a Folsom ticket goes there whether the Folsom Police Department or the CHP wrote it. Your citation shows the court and the date. The traffic call center at (916) 669-5712 can answer questions.

$24.99, and that covers the whole online course and the final exam. What you owe the court is separate: full bail, any proof of correction fees and the court's administrative fee. The court sets those amounts, so pay it as it directs and keep the two receipts apart.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 303 people killed or injured, 62nd of 103 similar cities. Motorcyclists numbered 26, 15th, and speed-related fatal or injury collisions 65, 23rd. Pedestrians numbered 12, 89th, and bicyclists 16, 73rd. The rankings describe the city's roads, not any driver's fault or eligibility.

Until the due date the court sets once it grants traffic school. That one date covers the course and the court payment, and Sacramento County Superior Court allows no extensions or partial payments. Ask for traffic school on or before the date written on your ticket.

Yes. Mirai Traffic School reports it electronically through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and the court retrieves it there. Keep Mirai Traffic School's confirmation with your citation number.

The Folsom Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento, South Sacramento and East Sacramento Areas, which serve Sacramento County and its state highways. Either way the ticket goes to Sacramento County Superior Court, under the same traffic school rules.
