What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Nevada County.

Nevada County had 101,911 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025. Interstate 80 crosses the high country through Truckee, while State Routes 49 and 20 tie Grass Valley and Nevada City together in the foothills, and State Route 174 runs toward Colfax. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 512 people killed or injured in county crashes, 45th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. One figure stands out. Crashes involving a drinking driver under 21 killed or injured 13 people, 6th in the state.

The court has two courthouses: 201 Church Street in Nevada City, and the Joseph Government Center at 10075 Levon Avenue in Truckee. Each has its own DMV court code, so give your school the one on your notice. The California Highway Patrol covers the county from its Grass Valley, Gold Run and Truckee Areas, and their tickets go to the same Superior Court as tickets from city police.

The court may mail a Courtesy Bail Notice some weeks after the ticket, and you cannot act until the citation reaches its system. The notice shows the bail, the due date and whether your violation qualifies for traffic school. Not receiving it does not cancel the ticket, and a missed date can add a civil assessment and cost you traffic school.

Two payments. The court takes the bail on your Courtesy Bail Notice plus its own traffic school amount, and it gives you the total when you ask for traffic school. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If you cannot afford the fine, the court's traffic page explains how to ask for a reduction, but its online tool for that cannot be used to ask for traffic school.

Pay the bail and ask for traffic school before the pay or appear date on your citation, the way the court's traffic page describes, or ask at either courthouse. Once the court receives payment, you may take the course. Questions go to the clerk at (530) 362-4309.

The court sets your due date, and your Courtesy Bail Notice shows it. Have your certificate reach the court by then. If you need more time, contact the court before the date passes.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, a non-commercial vehicle, no traffic school in the last 18 months, a notice that says your violation qualifies, and a request made before your pay or appear date.
