Sierra County had 3,098 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 3,232 in 2020. State Route 49 winds along the North Yuba River through Downieville and Sierra City and over to Sattley, State Route 89 runs north from Sattley through Sierraville, and the road to Loyalton heads east. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 41 people killed or injured in county crashes, 1st of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Speed-related and motorcycle crashes both rank 2nd.

Every ticket goes to the Sierra County Superior Court at 100 Courthouse Square in Downieville. The California Highway Patrol covers Sierra County from its Quincy, Truckee and Grass Valley Areas, and a CHP ticket lands at that same courthouse. You must respond to your citation whether or not a courtesy notice arrives, so if none has come, ask the court before your court date.

Two payments. The court charges the total fine plus a State/Court Administrative fee, and your courtesy notice shows what you owe. With more than one violation, ask the court for the amount due. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If you cannot afford the court's amount, you can ask it to consider your ability to pay, with proof of your finances.

Choose traffic school the way your courtesy notice describes, and pay the total fine and the fee before your court date or extended due date. If the ticket has a fix-it violation, you can choose it only by mail or in person, and the proof of correction goes with it.

The court sets the time, and your courtesy notice shows it. Choosing on time matters as much as finishing, because a driver who does not choose traffic school by the court date cannot ask for it later.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, no traffic school attended or chosen in the past 18 months, counted from violation date to violation date, no outstanding failure to appear or failure to pay, a moving infraction with no drugs or alcohol, and no speeding more than 25 mph over the limit.

Not if you were driving a commercial vehicle. In a personal vehicle you may be eligible. No points are added, but the DMV does not hide the conviction on your record.
