What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Lassen County.

Lassen County had 28,117 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 32,729 in 2020. US 395 runs south from Susanville past Honey Lake to Janesville, Milford and Doyle, State Route 36 comes east from Westwood, and State Route 139 heads north toward Bieber. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 176 people killed or injured in county crashes, 30th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Speed-related crashes rank 18th.

Adult and juvenile traffic cases both go to the Traffic Division at the Hall of Justice, 2610 Riverside Drive in Susanville. The California Highway Patrol's Susanville Area is responsible for Lassen County, so a ticket from a CHP officer on US 395 or State Route 36 lands at the same Hall of Justice as one from a city police officer.

Your courtesy notice says whether you may take traffic school. To take it, pay the bail plus the court's Traffic Violator School fee before your appearance date. If your certificate then arrives late, the court keeps the fee as bail and reports a conviction to the DMV.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Lassen County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Two payments. The bail and the court's Traffic Violator School fee go to the court, and your courtesy notice shows the amount. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. The court says its fee pays for monitoring the curriculum, the school lists and its traffic school clerk, and none of it goes to the school.

Pay the bail and the court's traffic school fee before your appearance date, the way your courtesy notice describes. If the ticket also has a fix-it violation, the court wants your proof of correction sent with your traffic school certificate.

The court counts the time from your payment, and your courtesy notice and the court's traffic page show when the certificate is due. Getting it there on time is your job, so confirm with the court that it arrived.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School, and your courtesy notice shows whether you start out eligible. You need a valid license and no traffic school for a violation in the 18 months before this one. Speeding more than 25 mph over the limit, alcohol or drug violations, violations worth more than one point and tickets in a commercial vehicle are excluded.

Be careful. The court warns of a phone scam aimed at Lassen County residents, and its own courtesy notice arrives by mail. If a caller asks you to pay, hang up and call the court at (530) 251-8205 to check your case.

The DMV's list of licensed courses, which the court links from its traffic page. Mirai Traffic School holds DMV license E0756.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The court provides a free interpreter in traffic cases. Ask right away on form INT-300, by phone at (530) 251-8205 or by email, because a hearing with no interpreter available can be moved to a later date.
