Every Shasta County ticket goes to one courthouse in Redding

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Shasta County.

Shasta County had 181,648 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, most of them in Redding, Anderson and Shasta Lake. Interstate 5 runs through all three, State Route 299 crosses the county from west to east, and State Routes 44, 89 and 36 climb into the mountains. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 726 people killed or injured in county crashes, 23rd of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Motorcyclists stand out, with 60 killed or injured, 18th in the state.

The Traffic Unit at the Main Courthouse, 1515 Court Street in Redding, handles every traffic ticket and every juvenile infraction in the county, because no branch courthouse hears traffic. The California Highway Patrol's Redding Area serves Shasta County, so a ticket from a CHP officer on Interstate 5 goes to the same Traffic Unit as one from a city police officer.

If no courtesy notice has come by the date at the bottom of your citation, contact the court, because a missing notice does not excuse the ticket. If you want traffic school, do not simply pay the bail on the notice. That payment closes the case, and a reportable violation then goes to the DMV as a conviction.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Shasta County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Two payments. The court charges the original bail plus its own Traffic Violator School fee, and your courtesy notice shows the amount and the due date. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If you cannot afford it, you can ask the court in person to consider your ability to pay.

By mail or in person at the Traffic Unit, paying the traffic school amount by the due date on your courtesy notice. A clerk or judicial officer must agree to your attendance, and the court then sends the school information and your completion date by mail or email.

The court sets your completion date and sends it with the school information once you sign up. If you miss it, the court turns the fees you paid into forfeited bail and reports the ticket to the DMV as a conviction, so start the course early.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, an infraction the DMV records and no traffic school for a ticket issued within 18 months of this one. A commercial vehicle, more than one point, alcohol or drug possession, more than 25 mph over the limit or a mandatory appearance rules it out.

The court's handout from CTSI, the California Traffic Safety Institute. It says that unless the court instructs otherwise, you may attend any school on the list. Mirai Traffic School is on it under DMV license E0756.

Once you pass, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court's traffic page says where to check your certificate. The court then keeps the conviction confidential, though with a commercial license it still shows on your record, without a point.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The court provides interpreters for all case types. Ask the clerk, and give its Interpreter Coordinator at (530) 245-6727 as much notice as you can.
