Interstate 5 runs through Dunsmuir, Mount Shasta, Weed and Yreka to Oregon, US 97 heads northeast from Weed to Dorris, and State Route 96 follows the Klamath River to Happy Camp. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 271 people killed or injured in county crashes, 7th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Nighttime crashes rank 1st, alcohol-involved crashes 4th and speed-related crashes 8th.

Every ticket goes to the Siskiyou County Superior Court at 411 Fourth Street in Yreka. The California Highway Patrol's Yreka and Mt. Shasta Areas cover the county, so a CHP ticket goes to the same courthouse as one from a city police officer. Clerks cannot reduce bail or close a case. Only a judicial officer can lower bail, in person at the traffic arraignment calendar, and the judges do not read letters asking for it.

The court sends one courtesy bail notice to the address on your citation. Leave it unanswered and the court can find you guilty in your absence, then give you a set time to act before the case goes to a collection agency.

Two payments. The court charges your bail plus its own non-refundable traffic school fee and a DMV fee, and your courtesy bail notice shows the bail under its Traffic School Option. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If you cannot afford the bail, you can ask a judicial officer at arraignment to consider your ability to pay.

Pay the bail and the court's traffic school fee together before the due date, the way your courtesy bail notice describes. Once the court has the request and the full amount, the clerk continues your case and sends a permission letter with instructions.

The court sets your new due date when it continues the case, and the permission letter explains what comes next. Making sure the court hears of your completion by that date is your job. If it does not, the court forfeits the bail and fee and reports a conviction with points to the DMV.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, no traffic school for a citation within 18 months of this one, no failure to appear, and a violation worth no more than one point. Alcohol or drug charges, speeding more than 25 miles per hour over, and tickets in a commercial vehicle are excluded.

Ask your own state's DMV first. The court cannot log in to another state's DMV system, and it warns that traffic school often costs more than the bail. Ask whether your state will keep the ticket from your insurer and your record.
