Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code. It matches your completion to your case at the right court. Your citation and courtesy notice name the court, and the code belongs to it.

Sierra County Superior Court has one traffic code, 46100, for its courthouse in Downieville. The court lists no other courthouse, so every Vehicle Code ticket written in the county ends up there.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. For a Sierra County ticket, choose Downieville and 46100.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

The court mails a courtesy notice to the address on your citation, and it says the notice answers most questions. The notice shows the fine due, the court date and whether you must appear. It also carries the case number the court asks for when you pay.

If the notice has not come, or you do not understand your options, the court says to come to the courthouse or ask by phone or mail before your court date. You must respond whether or not a notice arrives. The court's traffic page is the place to start online.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your courtesy notice lists how Sierra County Superior Court lets you choose traffic school, and the court's traffic page explains each way. Choose it and pay the total fine plus the court's State/Court Administrative fee on or before the court date or extended due date. The court turns down an election made late or without full traffic school bail, and it will not take one afterward. Paying the ticket without choosing traffic school puts the conviction on your driving record.

A fix-it violation on the ticket changes the route. The court then takes the election only by mail or in person, together with the proof of correction and its fees. The court's mailing address is PO Box 476, Downieville, CA 95936.

From citation to certificate in Sierra County

What Sierra County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The citation names the court and a date. The court mails a courtesy notice to the address on it, and the notice shows the fine and whether you must appear.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

Sierra asks for a valid license, no traffic school attended or elected in the past 18 months, counted from violation date to violation date, no outstanding failure to appear or failure to pay, a moving infraction with no drug or alcohol violation, and no more than 25 mph over the posted limit.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Before the court date or extended due date, choose traffic school the way your courtesy notice describes and pay the total fine plus the administrative fee. With several violations on one ticket, ask the court for the amount due first.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets how long you have to finish, and your courtesy notice shows it. The school charges its own enrollment fee, apart from the court's. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756, costs $24.99, and saves your place whenever you stop.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

The court retrieves your electronic completion certificate from the school or the DMV, then reports the violation to the DMV as a confidential conviction. The court's traffic page links a service that shows whether your certificate has arrived.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Sierra County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Respond anyway. The court says you must pay or appear on the court date, or contact the Traffic Division for a court appointment before the court date on your citation. Come to the courthouse or call (530) 289-3698 before that date.

Correct the problem, then have any law enforcement office sign the ticket as corrected, or send proof straight to the court by mail, in person or by email to superiorcourt@sierracourt.org. The court charges a transaction fee for each correction, due with the proof before your court date. Officers cannot sign off an insurance violation, so send the court proof of insurance valid on the citation date that shows its effective and expiration dates.

Yes, by trial by written declaration, where you and the citing officer each send statements and evidence in writing. Ask at the clerk's office or by mail to the courthouse address on your ticket, and deposit the bail with Form TR-205. A not guilty finding returns the bail, and if you disagree with the decision you can ask for a new trial in court, called a trial de novo.

No. You may appear for arraignment and plead not guilty without depositing bail, then ask there for a court trial. Setting arraignment and trial in one visit, or pleading not guilty in writing, requires bail.

A judicial officer hears the case, not a jury. You may hire a lawyer or appear on your own, and the court appoints no lawyer for an infraction unless you are in custody. At trial you can question the officer who wrote the ticket, bring witnesses and present evidence.

Ask the court to reduce what you owe based on your ability to pay, with proof that you lack the means. You can ask at any point, but the court answers only after a guilty or no contest plea. Its traffic page links an online request tool, where you can also ask for more time or for community service in place of the fine.

Not at the court. Parking tickets go to the Sierra County Treasurer and Tax Collector at (530) 289-3286.

Interpreters and language help

Sierra County Superior Court provides interpreters in traffic hearings, and you ask the clerk at the counter or the courtroom clerk for one. You can also send its Request for Court Interpreter form in person, by mail to PO Box 476 or by email. If no interpreter is free at your hearing, the court may continue the case until one is assigned. Sign language interpreters are available for any hearing. The court publishes its traffic page in Spanish. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
