Vallejo roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Vallejo.
The Census Bureau estimates 123,287 residents in Vallejo on July 1, 2025. Four state highways cross the city: Interstate 80, Interstate 780, State Route 29 and State Route 37.
Tickets in Vallejo come from two agencies. The Vallejo Police Department patrols city streets. The California Highway Patrol's Solano Area lists Vallejo among the cities it serves, and it patrols Interstate 80, Interstate 780, State Route 29 and State Route 37 along with other Solano County highways. Whichever agency wrote your ticket, it goes to Solano County Superior Court, and the court applies the same traffic school rules to both.
The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 339 people killed or injured in Vallejo crashes, 48th of 62 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Pedestrians stand out. Pedestrians killed or injured numbered 42, 15th in the group, and hit-and-run crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 60, 12th. Speed-related crashes with a death or injury numbered 55, 43rd, and bicyclists killed or injured numbered 12, 55th. OTS also lists 82 DUI arrests, 7th. The counts describe the city's roads as a whole, not fault in any one driver's case.
Vallejo's Traffic Engineering section monitors city streets, city-owned parking lots and traffic control devices, and recommends updates to the infrastructure. At regular intervals its staff count traffic volumes on major city streets to see how traffic patterns change over time. The section also represents Vallejo with state and federal agencies on traffic improvement programs.
Neighbors who want slower traffic on a residential street can petition the city for a speed table, a flat-topped hump long enough for a passenger car's whole wheelbase to rest on top. The petition needs signatures from at least 67% of the addresses on the street segment. The street must have a speed limit of 25 mph or less, and measured prevailing speeds must reach 32 mph or more. It cannot be a primary emergency vehicle route or a SolTrans transit route, and both the Fire Department and the Police Department's Traffic Division must sign off.
Adult traffic tickets from Vallejo go to Solano County Superior Court. The court's Vallejo branch, the Solano Justice Building at 321 Tuolumne Street, holds traffic arraignments and trials under DMV court code 48480, and its traffic hearings line answers at (707) 561-7860. The court also hears traffic at the Hall of Justice in Fairfield under code 48430, so your citation and courtesy notice are the final word on which courthouse has your case.
Traffic school is something you ask the court for. The court charges a traffic school fee on top of the fine, and your courtesy notice shows both amounts and the date to finish. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Solano County Superior Court asks for a valid driver's license, a moving infraction with no drug or alcohol violation, a speed no more than 25 mph over the posted limit, no traffic school in the 18 months before, counted from violation date to violation date, and no outstanding failure to appear or failure to pay. Drivers cited in a commercial vehicle cannot take it. The court makes the final decision.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court then reports the violation to the DMV as a confidential conviction, which keeps the point off your driving record. Before the date on your notice, check your case with the court and confirm that your name, license number and court code 48480 match, so there is time to fix a mismatch.
