American Canyon roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in American Canyon.

The Census Bureau estimates 22,773 people in American Canyon on July 1, 2025. State Route 29 runs through the city and works as its main street. The highway links Solano, Napa and Sonoma counties and carries much of the traffic into and out of Napa County, and the Napa Valley Transportation Authority reports serious safety and operations problems on the stretch between Napa Junction and American Canyon Road.

The authority is working with Caltrans and the city on improvements to that stretch. In February 2026 its board and the American Canyon City Council chose a corridor with traffic signals over one with roundabouts. The chosen design includes continuous paths for people on bikes and on foot, with curb ramps and crosswalks at every intersection.

Tickets in American Canyon come from two agencies. The Napa County Sheriff's Office patrols the city under contract, and the American Canyon Police Department is a division of it whose work includes motorcycle traffic enforcement. On State Route 29, the California Highway Patrol's Napa Area patrols as well. Tickets from both go to Napa County Superior Court.

The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 37 people killed or injured in American Canyon crashes, 64th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Hit-and-run crashes ranked worse than that overall place, with 5 that killed or hurt someone, 28th in the group. Pedestrians killed or injured numbered 4, ranked 45th, speed-related crashes 8, ranked 43rd, and no bicyclists were killed or injured, 96th. The figures describe the whole city, not fault in any one case.

American Canyon's Traffic Calming Program works toward zero traffic deaths and severe injuries through street design, public education and enforcement. Residents can send concerns about problem areas to the city for evaluation, and the program sets out which traffic calming measures fit a street. Traffic concerns go to the city's Traffic Working Group.

Adult traffic tickets from American Canyon go to Napa County Superior Court, which handles traffic in one building, the Criminal Courthouse at 1111 Third Street in Napa. Its Traffic Division, on the first floor, processes citations from law enforcement agencies across the county under DMV court code 28100 and answers at (707) 299-1160. Once the agency files your ticket, the court mails a courtesy notice to the address on the citation that explains your options.

Whether traffic school is open to you depends on the violations on your ticket, and the court decides. Napa's guidelines ask for no traffic school in the 18 months since your last violation, a valid California driver's license, speed no more than 25 mph over the limit, and no commercial vehicle. You pay the fine and the court's traffic school fee up front, and on payment the court gives you the date your completion is due. Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is a separate course fee. If you cannot pay the full amount and want traffic school, the court asks you to call it directly.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. If you skip or fail the course, the court keeps your fine and administrative fee and reports a conviction to the DMV.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Napa County Superior Court, at the Traffic Division on the first floor of the Criminal Courthouse, 1111 Third Street in Napa, code 28100. The court runs all traffic from that one building, so an American Canyon ticket goes there too. The Traffic Division's number is (707) 299-1160.

$24.99 for the online course and final exam. The court's fine and traffic school fee are paid to the court up front, and the court sets both. When you enroll with Mirai Traffic School, you pay the school only its course fee.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 37 people killed or injured in 2023, 64th of 103 similar cities. Hit-and-run crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 5, 28th, pedestrians 4, 45th, and speed-related fatal or injury crashes 8, 43rd, with no bicyclists killed or injured. The figures describe American Canyon as a whole, not fault or eligibility in one case.

On the date the court gives you when it receives your fine and traffic school fee. Until then, the Pay or Appear date on your ticket is the date you must act by, even if the courtesy notice has not reached you in American Canyon yet.

Mirai Traffic School reports it through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and the court retrieves it there. Keep the confirmation with your American Canyon citation number, and call the Traffic Division at (707) 299-1160 if you have a question about the case.

The American Canyon Police Department, a division of the Napa County Sheriff's Office, on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Napa Area on State Route 29. Both send tickets to Napa County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules do not change with the agency that stopped you.
