Petaluma roads, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Petaluma.
The Census Bureau estimates 59,688 people in Petaluma on July 1, 2025. US 101 and State Route 116 both cross the city. For people on foot or on a bike, the freeway is also a barrier, and a city study of five crossings looked at ways to connect the two sides of town, among them the Corona Road, East Washington Street and McKenzie Avenue overcrossings and the Lynch Creek Trail crossing at North McDowell Boulevard. Measure M, the 2004 Traffic Relief Act for Sonoma County, paid for that study.
Tickets in Petaluma come from two agencies. Patrol officers of the Petaluma Police Department work the city streets, and their job includes writing tickets. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Santa Rosa, Napa and Marin Areas serve Sonoma County. Whichever agency stops you, the ticket goes to Sonoma County Superior Court, and its traffic school rules stay the same.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 183 people killed or injured in Petaluma crashes, 57th of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Bicyclists stand out, with 22 killed or injured, 16th in the group, against 14 pedestrians, 54th. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 46, ranked 14th, and 15 motorcyclists were killed or injured, 21st. The figures describe the city's roads as a whole, not fault in any one case.
Petaluma's Local Road Safety Plan covers the whole city. It studies high collision locations and suggests improvements to reduce crashes, and the city works with the Sonoma County Transportation Authority on road safety. Under a state law, AB 43, the city is lowering speed limits to 20 mph on downtown streets and to 15 mph on streets near schools while children are present.
Adult traffic tickets from Petaluma go to Sonoma County Superior Court, which hears every one of them at the Traffic Division in the Hall of Justice, 625 Administration Drive in Santa Rosa. The DMV court code is 49460, and the traffic information line is (707) 521-6680. The court does not post case information online. Your Reminder Notice, that phone line and the public terminals on the first floor of the Hall of Justice are how you check a case.
Traffic school is something you ask the court for. The Reminder Notice shows the bail, the due date and whether your ticket can go to traffic school. You pay the court's total with traffic school, which includes a court administrative fee, before you enroll, and Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is a separate payment. Sonoma asks for a valid license, no traffic school in the 18 months before this violation, counted from violation date to violation date, no more than 25 mph over the limit, and a ticket not written in a commercial vehicle.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Finish by the court's due date. If you miss it, the court forfeits the bail, closes the case and reports a conviction to the DMV.
