Santa Rosa roads, crash data and traffic court

What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Santa Rosa.

The Census Bureau estimates 179,437 people in Santa Rosa on July 1, 2025. US 101 and State Route 12 cross the city, and the Santa Rosa Police Department protects a city that spans about 40 square miles.

Tickets in Santa Rosa come from two agencies. The Santa Rosa Police Department is the largest police department in Sonoma County, it runs a Traffic Bureau, and traffic safety is one of the department's stated priorities. On the state highways, the California Highway Patrol's Santa Rosa Area, which serves most of Sonoma County, writes the tickets. Both agencies send them to Sonoma County Superior Court.

The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 497 people killed or injured in Santa Rosa crashes, 54th of 62 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Crashes involving alcohol ranked highest among the city's figures, with 75 people killed or injured, 34th in the group. Pedestrians numbered 37, ranked 44th, bicyclists 23, ranked 45th, and speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone 74, ranked 52nd. These are citywide figures and say nothing about fault in one case.

The City Council adopted Santa Rosa's Local Road Safety Plan in July 2022. It studies collisions along the priority corridors of the city's 2018 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan and rechecks that plan's High-Injury Network with newer crash data. Its corridor studies include Fourth Street from E Street to Farmers Lane, Montgomery Drive from Alderbrook Drive to Hahman Drive, Stony Point Road from West Third Street to Sebastopol Road, and North Dutton Avenue from West College Avenue to West Third Street. The Sonoma County Transportation Authority oversaw this plan along with six others in the county.

Santa Rosa is home to the court as well. Sonoma County Superior Court hears all of the county's adult traffic tickets at the Traffic Division in the Hall of Justice, 625 Administration Drive, the new courthouse the court moved into in July 2026, under DMV court code 49460. Call (707) 521-6680 for traffic information. The court keeps case information off the internet, so checking a case means reading your Reminder Notice, making that call or using the public terminals on the Hall of Justice's first floor.

You ask the court for traffic school, and the Reminder Notice tells you whether your citation qualifies, along with the bail and the due date. A driver who qualifies pays the court the total due with traffic school, which carries a court administrative fee, and receives traffic school forms by mail after that. Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 is a separate charge. The court requires a valid license, no traffic school for a violation in the 18 months before this one, counted violation date to violation date, speed no more than 25 mph over the limit, and a violation outside a commercial vehicle.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Miss the court's due date and the court forfeits the bail, closes the case and reports a conviction to the DMV. A commercial license holder who took the course for a ticket in a personal vehicle must still contact the DMV's Driver Safety Office about the point, as the court directs.

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a Santa Rosa citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

Sonoma County Superior Court, right in Santa Rosa. Its Traffic Division sits in the Hall of Justice at 625 Administration Drive and handles every adult traffic ticket in the county under code 49460. For questions, call (707) 521-6680 with your citation number ready.

$24.99 for the course and final exam. The court's own charge, the total due with traffic school on your Reminder Notice, goes to the court, and the court does not refund it. Paying Mirai Traffic School does not pay the court or ask it for traffic school.

The Office of Traffic Safety counts 497 people killed or injured in 2023, 54th of 62 similar cities. Alcohol-involved crashes accounted for 75 of them, 34th, pedestrians 37, 44th, and bicyclists 23, 45th, while speed-related fatal or injury crashes numbered 74, 52nd. When Sonoma County Superior Court says it is. The court sets the due date, and the date of your stop in Santa Rosa does not decide it. If you cannot pay the court's full amount at once, call (707) 521-6587 before that date to hear the options.

Mirai Traffic School sends it electronically through the DMV's Traffic Violator Course Completion system under license E0756, and the court retrieves it from there. Keep the confirmation with your Santa Rosa citation. To see the case yourself, use the public terminals at the Hall of Justice or call the traffic line.

The Santa Rosa Police Department, including its Traffic Bureau, on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Santa Rosa Area on US 101 and State Route 12. Both send tickets to Sonoma County Superior Court, so the traffic school rules are the same either way.
