Orinda's freeway, hill roads and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Orinda.
The Census Bureau estimates 19,507 residents in Orinda on July 1, 2025, on 12.852 square miles of land, and State Route 24 splits the city in two. From Oakland the freeway crosses the county line inside the Caldecott Tunnel and then enters Orinda. BART's Yellow Line runs in the freeway median, where Orinda station has its island platform. Camino Pablo, the Orinda name for San Pablo Dam Road, has one lane each way from the city limit to Miner Road and two lanes each way from there to the freeway. South of State Route 24 it merges into Moraga Way toward Moraga.
Tickets in Orinda come from two agencies. The city's police services come through a contract with the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff, and the Orinda Police Department enforces traffic laws on city roads. The California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa Area, Dublin Area, Marin Area and Oakland Area serve Contra Costa County, and the Contra Costa Area lists State Route 24 among the highways it patrols. Both agencies send their tickets to Contra Costa County Superior Court.
Crash numbers for Orinda depend on who counts. The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 3 people killed or injured in Orinda crashes in 2023 and ranked the city 99th of 103 cities with 10,001 to 25,000 residents, where 1st is the worst. Its count covers city streets and the state highways a city shares with the CHP, but a crash report the CHP takes on a shared road does not count against the city.
The county transportation authority's safety action plan of January 2025, built on ten years of collision data, places Orinda's high injury network on State Route 24. From Orinda's own road safety plan it lists priority locations that each had at least one crash that killed or seriously injured someone, among them Camino Pablo from Bear Creek Road to Santa Maria Way, Moraga Way at Orchard Road and at Stein Way, and Miner Road from Honey Hill Road to Diablo View Road. In 2024 the authority announced a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All award that names Orinda among six partner cities for speed reduction and traffic-calming studies.
Orinda tickets go to Contra Costa County Superior Court, which hears traffic in Walnut Creek, Richmond and Pittsburg and assigns each case by where the citation was issued. Its page for the Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center, at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road, lists Orinda among the communities its traffic court serves. That building holds traffic trials and arraignments under DMV court code 07480, and the court's phone is (925) 608-1000. The reminder notice the court mails names the courthouse for your case.
Traffic school is the court's decision, and your courtesy notice says whether your ticket qualifies. The court charges a traffic school fee of its own on top of the fine, and the notice shows both with the due date. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Contra Costa County Superior Court allows traffic school if you hold a valid California license and have not attended it in California in the past 18 months, counted between violation dates.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Contra Costa still makes you responsible for checking that the certificate arrived, so look up your Orinda case before the due date. A finished course keeps one conviction in any 18-month period confidential and off your driving record.
