What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in El Cerrito.

The Census Bureau estimates 26,121 residents in El Cerrito on July 1, 2025, on 3.672 square miles of land in the far southwest corner of Contra Costa County. Interstate 80 runs north and south through the city, and San Pablo Avenue is its main surface street, the road traffic falls back on during major freeway incidents. South of Cutting Boulevard the avenue is State Route 123, a state highway outside the city's jurisdiction. San Pablo Avenue passes both BART stations, El Cerrito Plaza and El Cerrito del Norte. Across Cerrito Creek to the south lies Albany, which belongs to Alameda County.

Tickets in El Cerrito come from two agencies. The El Cerrito Police Department patrols the city's streets, and its traffic unit uses radar and lidar and holds sobriety checkpoints. The California Highway Patrol's Oakland Area lists El Cerrito among the communities it serves. Both agencies send their tickets to Contra Costa County Superior Court, where the traffic school rules do not depend on who stopped you.

The California Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 41 people killed or injured in El Cerrito crashes, 73rd of 93 cities with 25,001 to 50,000 residents, where 1st is the worst. Pedestrians numbered 9, 23rd in the group, and bicyclists 8, 20th, but speed-related crashes came to a single one, 88th. The city's worst rank on the list is for pedestrians aged 65 or older, 3 of them, 13th.

The city's public draft Local Road Safety Plan, released in July 2026, counted 702 reported crashes from 2018 to 2022. San Pablo Avenue makes up less than 10 percent of El Cerrito's lane miles, yet it had 30 percent of those crashes and 42.5 percent of the crashes at intersections. From 2018 to 2025, a high injury network of about five miles, 5 percent of the city's roads, carried 72 percent of injury crashes and 18 of the 21 that killed or seriously injured someone, and citywide 7 of every 10 of those serious crashes involved a pedestrian or bicyclist. The main risk is the unsignalized intersection, where 84 percent of crashes happen, most often from improper turns, unsafe starting and backing, or speeding, and the plan calls for a 25 mph maximum speed limit citywide.

El Cerrito has no courthouse. Contra Costa County Superior Court hears traffic in Richmond, Walnut Creek and Pittsburg, and its page for the George D. Carroll Courthouse at 100 37th Street in Richmond lists El Cerrito among the communities it serves. That courthouse holds traffic trials and arraignments under DMV court code 07460, and the court's phone is (925) 608-1000. The court location printed at the bottom of your ticket is the one for your case.

Traffic school is the court's call, and your courtesy notice says whether you are eligible. On top of the fine, the court charges a traffic school fee of its own, and the notice shows both amounts with your due date. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Contra Costa County allows traffic school if you have a valid California license and have not attended it in California in the past 18 months, counted from violation date to violation date.

Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Contra Costa still leaves it to you to make sure the certificate arrived, so check your El Cerrito case before the due date. A finished course holds one conviction in any 18-month period confidential, so it stays off your driving record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about handling a El Cerrito citation.

The statewide rules

The court for this city decides whether you may take traffic school, and you choose the school. Finishing it keeps one ticket in any 18 months confidential, with no point added. Our California traffic school rules page explains each rule with the law behind it.

The George D. Carroll Courthouse at 100 37th Street in Richmond, code 07460, is the Contra Costa County Superior Court building whose page lists El Cerrito among the communities it serves. The court also hears traffic in Walnut Creek and Pittsburg and assigns each case by where the citation was issued, so follow the courthouse on your ticket and reminder notice.

The El Cerrito Police Department on city streets, and the California Highway Patrol's Oakland Area, which lists El Cerrito among the communities it serves. Tickets from either agency go to Contra Costa County Superior Court under the same traffic school rules.

Only if your ticket names Contra Costa County Superior Court. Albany, across Cerrito Creek, and Berkeley are in Alameda County, so a ticket written there goes to Alameda County Superior Court under its own rules. California's other El Cerritos, in Riverside County and San Diego, send tickets to those counties' courts.

Mostly on San Pablo Avenue and the busier cross streets. On the Contra Costa stretch of the avenue, about 5.5 miles from the Alameda County line to Contra Costa College, the county transportation authority counted 6 people killed and 35 severely injured from July 2020 to June 2025, and 4 of the 6 were walking or biking.

Mirai Traffic School charges $24.99 for the course and final exam. The fine and the court's traffic school fee go to Contra Costa County Superior Court, which sets both amounts and prints them on your reminder notice.

On the due date the court sets. It mails a reminder notice, also called a courtesy notice, to the address on your ticket with that date, the amount you owe and whether traffic school is open to you, and it expects you to act on time even if the notice never arrives. Miss the date and the court may add a civil assessment and refer the case to its collection agency.
