Brentwood roads, speed limits and the Pittsburg courthouse
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Brentwood.
The Census Bureau estimates 66,607 residents in Brentwood on July 1, 2025, on 14.87 square miles of land with no water. The city sits at the eastern end of Contra Costa County, bordered on three sides by the county's Agricultural Core. No freeway served Brentwood until February 2008. State Route 4 now passes its western edge, with exits at Lone Tree Way, Sand Creek Road and Balfour Road, and past Balfour it continues as a two-lane highway to Marsh Creek Road. Vasco Road is the main route south to Livermore and Interstate 580.
Tickets in Brentwood come from two agencies. The Brentwood Police Department, established in 1948, patrols a city of about 14 square miles, and the California Highway Patrol's Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve Contra Costa County. Both send their tickets to Contra Costa County Superior Court, which applies one set of traffic school rules to each.
The Office of Traffic Safety's 2023 rankings count 189 people killed or injured in Brentwood crashes, 52nd of 103 cities of similar size, where 1st is the worst result. Speed stands out. Crashes that killed or injured someone with speed as the main factor numbered 45, ranking 16th, and 7 bicyclists under 15 were killed or injured, 7th in the group.
The police department counts more than 1,650 collisions in the city over the past three years. Unsafe speed played a part in 387 of them and impaired drivers in 122, and 116 came from drivers who failed to stop at a stop sign or signal. Its Traffic Safety Unit, three officers and a sergeant on police motorcycles, also drives an all-white Ford Explorer with concealed emergency lights to watch everyday driving. In June 2026 the city lowered speed limits on parts of Brentwood Boulevard, Lone Tree Way, O'Hara Avenue, Sand Creek Road and Walnut Boulevard after new engineering and traffic surveys.
Brentwood has no courthouse. Contra Costa County Superior Court assigns traffic cases by where the citation was issued and hears them in Pittsburg, Walnut Creek and Richmond. The court's Pittsburg building, the Richard E. Arnason Justice Center at 1000 Center Drive, DMV court code 07465, counts Brentwood among the communities it serves. Its main line is (925) 608-1000, and besides traffic it hears criminal, family law, small claims and juvenile cases. The reminder notice the court mails names the courthouse for your case.
Traffic school is the court's call. The reminder notice, also called a courtesy notice, says whether your ticket qualifies, what you owe and your due date. As a general rule Contra Costa County allows traffic school if you hold a valid California license and have not attended traffic school in California in the past 18 months, counted from one violation date to the other. The court collects the fine and a traffic school administrative fee and sets both amounts. Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 course is paid separately, and finishing keeps one conviction in any 18-month period confidential on your driving record.
After you pass the final exam, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. The court's traffic school page says an online school's certificate reaches it electronically but that making sure it arrives is your responsibility, so check your Brentwood case with the court before the due date.
