Antioch's highways, crash numbers and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Antioch.
The Census Bureau estimates 118,958 residents in Antioch on July 1, 2025. The San Joaquin River forms the city's northern edge, and State Route 4 crosses Antioch from west to east as an eight-lane freeway. A widening from 2010 to 2016 left three general lanes and one carpool lane each way through Pittsburg and Antioch. In eastern Antioch, Highway 4 turns south toward Oakley and Brentwood, and State Route 160 begins. After two interchanges, Route 160 narrows to a two-lane expressway and climbs onto the Antioch Bridge, which carries one lane each way across the river to Sherman Island in Sacramento County.
Tickets in Antioch come from two agencies. The Antioch Police Department patrols city streets such as Lone Tree Way, Hillcrest Avenue and A Street. On Highway 4 and Route 160, the ticket usually comes from the California Highway Patrol, whose Contra Costa, Dublin, Marin and Oakland Areas serve Contra Costa County. Both kinds go to Contra Costa County Superior Court, and its traffic school rules do not change with the agency.
The state Office of Traffic Safety counted 220 people killed or injured in Antioch crashes in 2023, 15 of them pedestrians, and 31 speed-related crashes that killed or injured someone. Antioch is ranked among 62 California cities of 100,001 to 250,000 people, where 1st is the worst, and it placed 59th for people killed or injured and 58th for speed.
By Bike East Bay's count, a cyclist killed by a drunk driver on Lone Tree Way in July 2024 was the 11th person to die on that road since it went from four lanes to six in 2018. In December 2025 the city said its officers had made 102 DUI arrests and answered 26 collisions involving pedestrians so far that year, and the police chief called traffic safety the number one complaint the department receives. State grants now pay for DUI enforcement, pedestrian safety operations and electronic citations that replace handwritten tickets.
Contra Costa County has no courthouse in Antioch. The court assigns a traffic case by where the ticket was written, and it hears traffic in Pittsburg, Walnut Creek and Richmond. Its page for the Richard E. Arnason Justice Center at 1000 Center Drive in Pittsburg, DMV court code 07465, lists Antioch among the communities it serves, and the court answers at (925) 608-1000. The court location printed at the bottom of your ticket is the one that has your case.
You ask the court for traffic school, and the reminder notice the court mails, which its traffic school page calls a courtesy notice, says whether your ticket is eligible. Contra Costa County allows it when you hold a valid California license and have not attended traffic school in California in the past 18 months, counted violation date to violation date. The court collects your fine and a traffic school administrative fee. It sets both amounts, and the notice shows what you owe and your due date. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Finishing keeps one conviction in any 18-month period confidential and off your driving record.
After you pass the final exam, Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Contra Costa County still says it is your responsibility to make sure the court receives the certificate, so check your case before the due date and confirm that your name, license number and court code match.
