Santa Barbara County traffic court, from Santa Maria to Carpinteria

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Santa Barbara County.

Santa Barbara County runs from the Santa Maria Valley down to a south-facing Pacific coast, home to 442,065 people in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025. US 101 follows that coast through Carpinteria, Santa Barbara and Goleta, then turns inland past Buellton to Santa Maria, while State Route 154 climbs from Santa Barbara into the Santa Ynez Valley. In 2023, crashes here killed or injured 2,489 people, ranking the county 21st of 58 with the California Office of Traffic Safety, where 1st is the worst. Bicyclists rank far worse, with 252 killed or injured, 2nd in California.

Tickets go to one of three traffic clerk offices, at the Figueroa Division in Santa Barbara, the Miller Division in Santa Maria or the Lompoc Division. The court files citations from every law enforcement agency in the county, and the Highway Patrol's Santa Maria, Buellton and Santa Barbara Areas all work here, so a CHP ticket and a city police ticket reach the same Superior Court. Watch for Solvang. Court code 42675 and some school websites still name a Solvang Division, but the court's Solvang page says no hearings are scheduled there and asks you not to mail payments to it, and the court moved Solvang filings to Lompoc in 2014. If your paperwork says Solvang, call Lompoc at (805) 737-7789.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Santa Barbara County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

You pay the court and the school separately. The court collects the full bail plus its own administrative fee, and your courtesy notice shows the bail. Mirai Traffic School charges $24.99 for the course and the final exam, paid to us.

The court sets your due date, counted from the day it receives your payment. It may grant one extension if you ask before the certificate is due. If you finish late, you can ask the court to accept the late certificate, and its traffic page says how late it will still take one.

By the due date on your citation or notice, sign up with the court and pay the full bail plus the court's fee. You can sign up on the court's website, by phone at (805) 568-3959, by mail or at a traffic clerk's counter.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license and a DMV-reportable infraction worth one point at most, with no alcohol or drugs, no speed over 25 mph above the limit, no mandatory appearance, no commercial vehicle and no traffic school in the past 18 months.

Ask the court to decide your ability to pay on forms SC-8028 and SC-1038, with no bail deposit, or to convert bail to community work service at non-profit agencies in Santa Barbara County.

The court's traffic page points to the California DMV website, where you look up a licensed internet course. Mirai Traffic School's license is E0756. We report your completion to the DMV, and the court says the DMV then notifies it.

Mirai Traffic School teaches the course and final exam in all four. At court, several traffic clerks speak Spanish, and interpreters are free in traffic infraction cases. Ask as early as you can, at (805) 882-4632 for Santa Barbara or (805) 614-6661 for Santa Maria and Lompoc.
