What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Kern County.

Kern County stretches from the south end of the San Joaquin Valley over the Tehachapi Mountains into the Mojave Desert, with 927,068 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025. Interstate 5 runs up the valley's west side, and State Route 58 crosses from Bakersfield through Tehachapi to Mojave. The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 6,028 people killed or injured in Kern County crashes in 2023, 52nd of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Children on foot are the exception, with 30 pedestrians under 15 killed or injured, 15th in the state. Tickets from the CHP's Bakersfield and Mojave Areas go to the same Superior Court as those from sheriff's deputies and city police.

The court hears adult traffic cases in six buildings, and the bottom of your citation names yours. Bakersfield-area tickets go to the Metropolitan Traffic Division at 3131 Arrow Street, not the downtown courthouse on Truxtun Avenue, and the rest go to Delano, Lamont, Shafter, Mojave or Ridgecrest. The court closed its Taft courthouse in June 2022 until further notice and moved Taft cases to Lamont. If your paperwork names Taft, call Lamont at (661) 610-7100.

Kern also sets a strict order. Pay the bail on your courtesy notice and the court's traffic school fee before you start any course, because the court rejects a certificate from a course taken before payment. A driver under 18 cited for a moving violation must appear with a parent or legal guardian.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. California traffic school rules Check your eligibility

Two separate payments. The court charges the bail on your courtesy notice plus its own traffic school administrative fee, and its traffic school page shows the fee. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, final exam included. If paying the court is hard, you can ask it to reduce the amount while the fine remains unpaid.

The court sets the due date once it has your payment and request, and sends it with your instructions. Proof of completion must reach the court by that date, and the court says the school sends that proof directly. Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV after you pass. If you miss the date on your citation, the court may hold a trial in your absence and add a fee.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, no traffic school on a citation issued within 18 months of this one, no mandatory appearance, a due date not yet past, and speed no more than 25 mph over the limit or as the judicial officer decides. Class A, B and commercial Class C drivers qualify only when cited in a non-commercial vehicle, and the court says the conviction then stays visible but adds no point.

Yes. The court sends drivers to the California Traffic Safety Institute list, (661) 940-1907, and says you may attend any school on it. CTSI's Kern County list shows Mirai Traffic School as E0756, an internet course, including under its Japanese and Russian headings.

You can take Mirai Traffic School's lessons and final exam in English, Spanish, Japanese or Russian. In court, Kern County provides free interpreters in traffic cases. File the Interpreter Request Form in person at the clerk's office before the hearing. For Spanish, you can also ask court staff at the hearing.
