Inyo County Traffic School

Inyo County had 18,158 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 19,020 in 2020. US 395 runs the Owens Valley through Lone Pine, Independence and Bishop, State Route 190 crosses Death Valley past Furnace Creek, and State Route 127 heads south through Shoshone and Tecopa. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 137 people killed or injured in county crashes, 28th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. The CHP's Bishop Area patrols nearly all of the county, so a ticket from a CHP officer on US 395 lands in the same Superior Court as one from the Inyo County Sheriff's Office.

The court hears traffic at 301 West Line Street in Bishop and in the Historic Courthouse at 168 North Edwards Street in Independence. After it enters your ticket, it mails a Reminder Notice to the address on the citation. The notice shows the bail, the due date and whether you can take traffic school. The due date also appears at the bottom of your citation, and it holds even if the notice never comes.

To ask for traffic school, pay the bail plus the court's own traffic school fee by the due date. Your notice lists the amount, and the court's traffic page lists the ways to pay. The court sets the date to finish, counted from the due date on your ticket or notice. Miss the due date and the court may raise the bail, add a late charge and a civil assessment, and send the case to collections.
