Mono County hears tickets in Mammoth Lakes and Bridgeport, and traffic school needs payment in full

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Mono County.

Mono County had 12,505 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 13,199 in 2020. US 395 runs the length of the county from Walker and Bridgeport past Mono Lake and June Lake to Mammoth Lakes, US 6 crosses the east through Benton and Chalfant, and State Route 108 comes over Sonora Pass. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 116 people killed or injured in county crashes, 12th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Speed-related crashes rank 7th.

Tickets are heard at the Mammoth Lakes Courthouse, 100 Thompsons Way, and at the Bridgeport Courthouse, 278 Main Street. Both use DMV court code 26660, and all traffic mail goes to the Mammoth Lakes address. The CHP's Bridgeport Area patrols most of unincorporated Mono County and its Bishop Area covers the southern part, and a ticket from either one lands in this same court. Email to traffic@mono.courts.ca.gov gets the quickest reply.

The court sets its own traffic school fee and the time you have to finish, and your notice of bail and the court's traffic page show both. It allows traffic school only when you pay the bail and that fee in full. One payment choice on the traffic page forfeits the bail and reports a conviction, so follow its traffic school instructions exactly. The court enters citations by appearance date, so a new ticket may not be in its system yet. Drivers under 18 go through the Probation Department.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Mono County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Two separate payments. The court charges its own traffic school fee on top of your full bail, and your notice of bail and the court's traffic page show the amount. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If paying the court is hard, you can ask it to consider your ability to pay at any point before your fines and fees are fully paid.

By mail, sign and return the Request to Attend Traffic School with your Notice of Bail and the bail plus the court's fee. If you pay another way, pick the choice the traffic page names for traffic school, because another choice forfeits your bail and reports a conviction.

The court sets the time, counted from the day you pay, or a judge gives you a date if you appear in court. Your notice and the court's traffic page show it. If you miss it, the case closes and a conviction goes to the DMV. The school reports your completion to the court electronically, so you send the court nothing.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. It must be a moving violation, with no traffic school in the past 18 months counted from violation date to violation date, speeding no more than 25 mph over, no commercial vehicle, no alcohol or drugs and no outstanding failure to appear or pay.

The California Traffic Safety Institute list for Mono County, which the court links. It has no school inside the county, names the nearest ones, and includes Mirai Traffic School, E0756, among its online schools.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The court provides interpreters in traffic cases by service priority. Ask the counter or courtroom clerk, or send the court's interpreter request form, as early as you can.
