State Route 99 carries the valley traffic through Madera and Chowchilla, State Route 41 climbs past Coarsegold and Oakhurst toward Yosemite, and State Routes 145 and 152 cross the farmland. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 1,119 people killed or injured in county crashes, 40th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. One figure ranks 1st in the state, the 14 pedestrians under 15 who were killed or injured. Drinking drivers under 21 rank 10th.

Every traffic case goes to the Traffic Division in the full-service courthouse at 200 South G Street in Madera. The CHP's Madera Area enforces traffic law in the unincorporated county and its Oakhurst Area serves eastern Madera County, and their tickets reach this court just as city police tickets do. Mail your traffic school request soon after your courtesy notice arrives, because the court counts your time to finish from the postmark on it.

The court reminds drivers that the traffic school is a private company that charges its own tuition, on top of the court's fee. It also warns that skipping traffic school when you are eligible may hurt your car insurance.

California traffic school rulesCheck your eligibility

You pay the court the total bail on your courtesy notice plus its non-refundable traffic school fee, and the court's traffic page shows the current fee. The bail depends on the violation. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99, paid to us.

Send the total bail and the traffic school fee together to the Traffic Division, Madera Superior Court, 200 South G Street, Madera, CA 93637. If you cannot pay the full amount, schedule an arraignment and ask the court to consider your ability to pay.

The court sets your due date, counting from the postmark on your request, and your certificate must reach the court by then. If it does not, the court keeps the fees and bail and reports a conviction to the DMV.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, and the offense cannot fall within 18 months of an earlier violation you took traffic school for. The ticket cannot carry more than one point, involve alcohol or drugs, or be a tank vehicle violation.
