A Mariposa County ticket goes to Bullion Street, but a Yosemite ranger's ticket goes to federal court

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Mariposa County.

Mariposa County had 16,918 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 17,133 in 2020, and has no incorporated city. State Route 140 follows the Merced River from Mariposa through Midpines and El Portal to Yosemite Valley, State Route 49 runs south past Bootjack, and State Route 41 enters the park from the south. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 103 people killed or injured in county crashes, 20th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst.

County tickets go to the Historic Courthouse at 5088 Bullion Street in Mariposa, where the court holds all of its matters. The county built it four years after it formed in 1850, and the court says no courthouse west of the Rocky Mountains has been in use longer. The CHP's Mariposa Area patrols State Routes 140 and 49 and the county roads, and the Oakhurst Area also serves the county, so a ticket from a CHP officer lands at this courthouse.

A ticket from a federal officer inside Yosemite is a different case. It is a federal violation notice, and the U.S. District Court's Yosemite court and its Central Violations Bureau handle it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Mariposa County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Your bail, the court's traffic school fee and Mirai Traffic School's $24.99 course. The court sets its fee but its traffic page does not print it, so read the amount on your courtesy notice or ask the traffic clerk at (209) 966-2005.

Follow the options on your courtesy notice. The court's page gives no separate steps, so for anything unclear, call the traffic clerk or email traffic.clerk@mariposacourt.org before your due date. Skip the court's online ability to pay tool for this, because the court says it is not for drivers who want traffic school.

The court sets the date and your courtesy notice shows it, because the traffic page does not print a deadline. Once you finish, the court's page links a status check where you can see whether your certificate arrived.

If a federal officer wrote it, it is a federal violation notice, and you pay or respond through the Central Violations Bureau at 1-800-827-2982. The federal court may allow traffic school if you file its request form well before your court date, and it sets the deadline. The certificate must be emailed to you so you can mail it to the CVB with the fine, so confirm a school can do that before you enroll.

For a county ticket, the court decides, not Mirai Traffic School, and your courtesy notice shows whether you qualify. The federal court lists its own limits: no traffic school for a moving violation in the last 18 months, no commercial license, no speeding more than 25 over and no alcohol or drug offense.

The DMV's list of licensed traffic schools, which the court links from its traffic page. Mirai Traffic School holds DMV license E0756.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The county court provides interpreters at no cost in traffic cases. Ask the clerk's office before your hearing, or the courtroom staff at the hearing itself.
