Alpine County ranks 1st for alcohol and speed crashes, and every ticket goes to Markleeville

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Alpine County.

Alpine County had 1,043 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, down from 1,178 in 2020, and no incorporated city. Its three highways are mountain passes: State Route 88 over Carson Pass past Kirkwood, State Route 4 over Ebbetts Pass by Bear Valley, and State Route 89 through Markleeville. In 2023 the California Office of Traffic Safety counted 45 people killed or injured in county crashes, 2nd of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Alcohol-involved and speed-related crashes both rank 1st.

Every ticket goes to the Alpine County Courthouse at 14777 State Route 89 in Markleeville, where the Traffic Division hears Vehicle Code infractions by adults and juveniles. The court has no online case lookup and no public terminal, so call the clerk with your citation number to get your case number. The California Highway Patrol's San Andreas and South Lake Tahoe Areas both patrol parts of the county, and a ticket written on any of the three passes lands in the same Markleeville court.

When the court allows traffic school, you pay the full bail and the court's non-refundable administrative fee together, before your due date. The court sets that fee and the time to finish, and your courtesy notice shows both. Under California Rule of Court 4.104, a clerk grants the request when you hold a valid license and the violation qualifies.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Alpine County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Two separate payments. The court charges your bail plus its own non-refundable administrative fee, and your courtesy notice shows the amounts. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If paying the court is hard, you can ask it to consider your ability to pay, though a judge answers only after you plead guilty or no contest.

Pay the bail and the court's traffic school fee together, before your due date, in one of the ways the back of your courtesy notice lists. If you pay by mail, write "traffic school" and your docket number on the payment.

The court sets the time and counts it from your payment or your court appearance, and your courtesy notice shows the due date. The school reports your completion to the court electronically, so you do not send a certificate.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license. You are generally not eligible after traffic school in the last 18 months, a speed more than 25 mph over, an unpaid failure to appear or pay, or a commercial license in a commercial vehicle.

The court calendars every traffic case from the response date on your citation, so you never call to get on calendar. If you miss that date, the court treats it as your choice of a trial by declaration in absentia under Vehicle Code section 40903, and an unpaid balance brings a civil assessment.

The DMV's list of licensed traffic schools. The court accepts completions only from schools the California DMV licenses, and Mirai Traffic School holds DMV license E0756.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The court posts a Request for Interpreter form and points to the Judicial Council's language access website. Call the clerk at (530) 694-2113 before your date to arrange an interpreter.
