Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code. It matches your completion to your case at the right court. Your courtesy notice names the division that has your citation, and the code belongs to that division.

Santa Barbara County Superior Court hears traffic in three divisions, each with its own code: 42460 for the Figueroa Division in Santa Barbara, 42470 for the Lompoc Division and 42465 for the Miller Division in Santa Maria. The court files citations from every law enforcement agency in the county, the California Highway Patrol included, and its traffic court handles traffic, animal, fishing, boating and local code infractions.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. Pick the division on your courtesy notice.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

The officer writes a promise to appear date at the bottom of your citation. It is a due date to resolve the citation, not a court date. Once the agency delivers the citation, the court mails a courtesy notice with the bail, the deadline to appear without added penalties, whether you can take traffic school and what a fix-it violation needs.

The court cannot quote bail until the citation reaches it. You must still contact the court by phone or in person by the promise to appear date, whether or not the notice has come. The court's automated system, online or by phone, finds a citation by citation number or driver's license number.

How to ask for traffic school

Follow the directions on the back of your courtesy notice. The court takes traffic school requests on its website, by phone at (805) 568-3959 and in person at the Traffic Clerk's Office, on or before the due date on the citation or notice. You pay the full bail plus the court's non-refundable administrative fee.

A clerk cannot grant a request unless you meet every requirement on the court's list. If the same citation carries a fix-it violation, send the signed proof of correction and the court's fee for each correctable violation at the same time you ask for traffic school.

What the court does with your ticket, and what Mirai Traffic School does for you.

From citation to certificate in Santa Barbara County

What Santa Barbara County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The citation carries your promise to appear date. The courtesy notice follows by mail and shows whether traffic school is open to you.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

You need a valid license, an infraction the court reports to the DMV, no traffic school for a violation in the past 18 months, and a citation outside a commercial vehicle. The citation may carry no more than one point, no alcohol or drugs, no speed more than 25 mph over the limit and no mandatory appearance.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

By the due date, sign up online, by phone or at the clerk's office, and pay the full bail and the court's fee.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets the date to finish from the day it receives your payment, and it may grant one extension if you ask before the certificate is due. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756 and costs $24.99.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

When you pass, the DMV notifies the court, and the court sends a confidential conviction to the DMV under Vehicle Code 1803.5. A course not finished by the due date means the court reports the citation as a conviction instead.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Santa Barbara County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

If the court has already reported a conviction, you can ask it to accept the late certificate and update the DMV. The traffic page states how late the court will still accept one and the fee it charges. Past that point, the court turns the request down.

Not through the court. Once a delinquent case goes to Enhanced Court Collections, you lose the chance to work with the court directly, and that includes traffic school and community work service. The court also adds a civil assessment, which it may not impose if you show good cause in the window the traffic page gives.

Plead not guilty at the Traffic Clerk's Office by the due date, with no bail posted, and the clerk schedules the trial. The court subpoenas the officer who wrote the citation. You can reset the trial date once, by mail or in person, and a request that arrives too close to the trial cannot move it.

Yes. Ask for a trial by written declaration in person or by mail by the due date, with your address, phone number, citation number and the full bail that Vehicle Code 40902 requires. The court returns a request that comes without bail and mails its decision. Forms TR-200, TR-205 and TR-220 cover the instructions, the request and a new trial.

Ask the court for a judicial determination of your ability to pay on forms SC-8028 and SC-1038, with no bail deposit. The court can also convert bail to community work service at non-profit agencies in Santa Barbara County, and the traffic clerk explains how to start.

If you were driving a non-commercial vehicle and are otherwise eligible, one conviction in any 18-month period shows on your record without a violation point once you finish. The court says to notify the DMV Mandatory Actions Unit at (916) 657-6525 afterward so the point is masked.

Interpreters and language help

The traffic clerk's offices have several Spanish-speaking clerks, some forms come in Spanish, and a Spanish interpreter is usually in the courtroom for traffic hearings. Interpreters are free in traffic infraction cases. Ask as early as possible, at (805) 882-4632 for Santa Barbara or (805) 614-6661 for Santa Maria and Lompoc. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
