Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

After you get a citation, the court mails a courtesy notice to the address on it. The notice explains how to take care of the ticket and says whether you must appear. The court does not process notices right away, so one may arrive close to your due date. If none comes, you must still appear at the courthouse or settle the case by mail, and you must tell the court if the address on the citation is wrong.

The court's site posts a traffic calendar. If you do not understand your options, come to the clerk's office or write before your appearance date.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your courtesy notice says whether traffic school is one of your options, and the court's traffic page explains how to ask. You pay the court's non-refundable traffic school fee plus the bail by the due date. The court then extends your case for the course and for the certificate of completion to reach it.

From citation to certificate in Del Norte County

What Del Norte County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The court mails a courtesy notice to the address on the citation, and it tells you your options and whether you must appear. Without it, you must still act by the due date.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

Del Norte asks for a moving violation, no more than 25 mph over the limit if it is speeding, no traffic school in the 18 months from your first violation date to the latest one, no alcohol or drug charge, no unpaid failure to appear, and a home in California. A tank vehicle violation or a serious violation in a commercial vehicle rules you out.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Pay the court's traffic school fee and the bail by the due date, the way your courtesy notice describes. The court does not refund the fee.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court extends your case for the course and sets the date your certificate must reach it. Choose a school from the DMV's list. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756, costs $24.99, and saves your place whenever you stop.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

The court makes it your responsibility to see that it receives your proof of completion. Check with the clerk at (707) 464-8115 before the extended date.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Del Norte County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Appear on or before your due date, and call the court to schedule the appearance. Check in at the Traffic Division clerk's office before the court session starts. The court grants no extensions on these tickets, and missing the date can bring a misdemeanor failure to appear charge.

Your notice lists them. They may include paying the ticket, attending traffic school, appearing in court, a mandatory appearance, asking by mail or in person for a court appearance, or asking for a trial by written declaration.

Tell the clerk in person, by phone or in writing by the appearance date and time. You can plead not guilty at an arraignment and come back for a trial when the officer is present. Or, under Vehicle Code section 40519, plead not guilty in writing and have the arraignment and trial together, which calls for a deposit. The clerk can help you arrange a different date if you ask before the time on your courtesy notice.

Ask on or before the appearance date on your ticket or notice. The court decides the case without you in court, on Judicial Council forms TR-205 and TR-200, which you can get at the clerk's office, by mail, from the county Law Library or online. Form TR-220 asks for a new trial. An infraction that needs a mandatory appearance still needs you in court.

Have an authorized representative of the police agency that cited you complete the Certificate of Correction on the back of the notice or citation. A DMV clerk can certify registration and driver's license violations. Send the proof with the court's correction fee, or with the bail, by the due date.

Ask the court to consider your ability to pay at any point, with proof that you lack the means, but it answers only after you plead guilty or no contest. Use the court's online request tool, which works even for a case in collections, or form TR-320. The online tool is not for traffic school, a contest or a fix-it reduction. If you do not act by the date on your citation and notice, the court may add a fee.

For infractions, the court offers community work service. It publishes an information sheet and a defendant declaration, and it points to the IRS list of registered nonprofit organizations.

Interpreters and language help

The court's traffic page does not describe interpreter service, so ask the clerk at (707) 464-8115 well before your date. The court's site has a Spanish version, with its traffic calendar. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
