Gilroy highways, crash data and traffic court
What the local roads, speed limits and court mean for your citation in Gilroy.
The Census Bureau estimates 60,764 residents in Gilroy on July 1, 2025, on 16.577 square miles of land at the southern end of Santa Clara County. The city sits at the junction of US 101, which runs north and south through town, and State Route 152, an east-west route. State Route 152 comes in from Watsonville over Hecker Pass, a narrow and winding road, passes through Gilroy's shopping district on a street with traffic signals and heads east over Pacheco Pass toward Interstate 5 and the Central Valley.
Tickets in Gilroy come from two agencies. The Gilroy Police Department patrols city streets such as Monterey Road and Leavesley Road, and its Traffic Division investigates major injury crashes and enforces traffic law. The California Highway Patrol's Hollister-Gilroy Area holds primary law enforcement jurisdiction over the state highways of south Santa Clara and San Benito counties, so US 101 and State Route 152 fall to its officers. Whichever agency stopped you, the case goes to Santa Clara County Superior Court under one set of traffic school rules.
The state Office of Traffic Safety compares Gilroy with California cities of 50,001 to 100,000 people. Its 2023 figures count 214 people killed or injured in Gilroy crashes, 35th of 103, where 1st is the worst result. Motorcyclists stand out, with 12 killed or injured, 9th in the group, and 19 bicyclists were killed or injured, 18th. Speed-related crashes that killed or hurt someone numbered 33, 39th, and police made 118 DUI arrests.
The motorcycle numbers match the police department's own focus. Gilroy police run Ride to Live, a skills class for motorcycle riders taught by the department's motor officers and paid for with an Office of Traffic Safety grant. The city's traffic engineers repeat a citywide Engineering and Traffic Survey every seven years to set speed limits, and a Neighborhood Traffic Management Program lets residents help solve traffic problems on their own streets.
In August 2026 the City Council hired a consultant to write a Comprehensive Roadway Safety Action Plan, paid for mostly by a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant. The city's staff report for that vote counts 82 crashes with serious injuries or deaths in Gilroy from 2021 through 2025, 6 of them fatal. The city has also posted new school zone speed limits of 15 or 20 mph, and the signs at each school zone show which limit applies.
Gilroy has no traffic courthouse of its own. Santa Clara County Superior Court takes traffic at two buildings, the South County Morgan Hill Courthouse at 301 Diana Avenue, DMV court code 43635, and the Family Justice Center Courthouse in San Jose. The traffic line for both is (408) 556-3000. The court hears a traffic case in the county where the citation was written, so a Gilroy ticket stays in Santa Clara County wherever you live. Your citation and courtesy notice name the courthouse for your case.
Traffic school is the court's decision. Santa Clara's bail schedule marks every offense as eligible for traffic school or not, and when you qualify the court adds its own fee to the bail. You cannot sign up until the citation is in the court's system, and the courtesy notice that follows shows the amount and the due date. Mirai Traffic School's course is a separate $24.99. Under state law, the first traffic school conviction in any 18-month period stays confidential.
Mirai Traffic School reports your completion to the DMV electronically, and the court retrieves it from there. Santa Clara County Superior Court turns away proof from a school the DMV has not licensed. Mirai Traffic School holds license E0756, and once it reports, the court says the driver has nothing further to do. Hold on to the confirmation and your Gilroy citation number until the case closes.
