Your citation

Traffic courts in Santa Cruz County

Your courtesy notice names the courthouse assigned to your case.

Santa Cruz Courthouse701 Ocean Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060DMV court code 44460 · (831) 420-2200
Watsonville Courthouse1 Second Street, Watsonville, CA 95076(831) 786-7200

The DMV lists court code 44460 under the Santa Cruz Courthouse, and the Watsonville Courthouse has no code of its own. Your courtesy notice names the courthouse, and the traffic line is (831) 420-2200.

Citations issued to drivers under 18 are handled separately: Juvenile Division, Watsonville Courthouse, Watsonville, (831) 786-7200.

Important

The court decides whether you are eligible for traffic school. Mirai Traffic School cannot approve or guarantee eligibility. Check your courtesy notice, or ask Santa Cruz County Superior Court, if you are unsure.

Santa Cruz County traffic court in Santa Cruz and Watsonville

What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Santa Cruz County.

Santa Cruz County wraps the north curve of Monterey Bay, with 258,852 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025. State Route 1 follows the bay from Santa Cruz to Watsonville, State Route 17 crosses the mountains toward San Jose, State Route 9 climbs the San Lorenzo Valley, and State Route 152 leaves Watsonville for Gilroy. The CHP's Santa Cruz Area serves the whole county, and its tickets go to the same Superior Court as city police tickets.

Bicycle crashes set this county apart. The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 1,315 people killed or injured in Santa Cruz County crashes in 2023, 19th of 58 counties in a ranking where 1st is the worst. For bicyclists the county ranked 1st, with 149 riders killed or injured, and the 16 under 15 ranked 3rd.

Both courthouses, Santa Cruz on Ocean Street and Watsonville on Second Street, keep a traffic calendar, and either clerk's office takes a traffic school request. The court mails your courtesy notice once the citing agency's ticket reaches it, and its Traffic Citation Alert Service can text you when the ticket is filed. A missing notice does not excuse the ticket.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Santa Cruz County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Two payments. The court takes the full bail on your courtesy notice plus its non-refundable traffic school fee, paid together, and the court sets both amounts. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, paid to us. If you do not finish, the court reports a conviction and keeps its fee as payment in full.

No. The court sets your completion date when you pay and gives no extension or grace period. Before you pay, you can ask a clerk's office to extend the date to appear on your courtesy notice.

By paying, before you attend a class. Clear any correctable violations, then pay the bail and the court's fee together and choose traffic school in that same payment. A payment made without it closes the case, so if the payment page does not offer it, contact a clerk's office first.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. You need a valid license, no traffic school within 18 months counted from violation date to violation date, no failure to appear, and a non-commercial vehicle. Equipment, parking, misdemeanor, alcohol or drug and mandatory-appearance offenses do not qualify.

To the DMV's list of licensed schools, not a county list. For online courses, the court's instructions say to choose Internet under Type of Instruction and leave the other fields blank. Mirai Traffic School's license number is E0756.

Mirai Traffic School teaches in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. The court assigns qualified interpreters at no cost in traffic proceedings. Call the Language Access Coordinator at (831) 420-2427 before your date, or ask at the hearing.

Most moving and stopping infractions by a minor go through the traffic division. The date at the bottom of the citation is a due date, not a court date, so contact the court if no courtesy notice arrives by then. A minor accused of a crime goes to Juvenile Justice Court in Watsonville.
