Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code. It matches your completion to your case at the right court. In Santa Cruz County one code covers both courthouses that hear traffic.

Santa Cruz County Superior Court hears traffic at the Santa Cruz Courthouse on Ocean Street and at the Watsonville Courthouse on Second Street, with one commissioner assigned to traffic in both. The DMV list gives the county a single code, 44460, and Watsonville has none of its own.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. For any Santa Cruz County ticket, choose Santa Cruz County Superior Court and 44460.

Most moving and stopping infractions by a minor go through the traffic division like an adult ticket, and the date at the bottom of the citation is a due date, not a court date. If no courtesy notice arrives by that date, contact the court. A minor accused of a crime goes to Juvenile Justice Court at the Watsonville Courthouse.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

The date on an infraction ticket is not a court date. The court mails a courtesy notice to the address on the ticket once the agency's ticket reaches it, and until then clerks cannot quote a fine. Read both sides of the notice, because it lists the violations and your options.

If the notice has not come, search the name on the ticket in the court's public case search, which the traffic page links, or email or call the court with your name and ticket number. Include your birthdate and citation number in any question about a ticket. The court's Traffic Citation Alert Service can also text you when your ticket is filed. Not receiving a notice does not relieve you of the ticket.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

The court's traffic school page explains how to ask. Pay the entire bail on the courtesy notice and, at the same time, the court's non-refundable traffic school fee, through the court's website, by mail or at the Santa Cruz or Watsonville clerk's office. By mail, make the payment out to Santa Cruz Superior Court and include your case number.

Choose traffic school when you pay. A payment made without it closes the case, and traffic school is no longer an option. If the payment screen does not offer traffic school, contact the clerk's office before you pay anything.

From citation to certificate in Santa Cruz County

What Santa Cruz County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The ticket names the court, and the courtesy notice follows once the agency's ticket is entered. The date on the ticket is a due date, not a court date.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

You need a valid license, no traffic school in the last 18 months counted violation date to violation date, no failure to appear on the ticket, and an eligible violation in a non-commercial vehicle. Clear any correctable violation first. Equipment, parking, misdemeanor, alcohol or drug and mandatory appearance offenses do not qualify.

  3. 3

    You pay the court

Pay the bail and the court's fee together before you attend a class, and choose traffic school in the same payment.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets the completion date when it receives your payment and gives no extension or grace period. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756, costs $24.99, and charges separately from the court.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

After you finish, the court reports a confidential conviction to the DMV, so it stays off your public record and no point is assessed. If you do not finish, the court reports a conviction and keeps the fee as payment in full.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Santa Cruz County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Only for some violations. The court requires an appearance for every misdemeanor, for a driver under 21 with a blood alcohol level of .05 or more under Vehicle Code 23140, for a bicyclist riding under the influence under Vehicle Code 21200.5, and for speeding over 100 mph under Vehicle Code 22348. Your courtesy notice says when you must appear.

Email, call or visit the clerk's office. No payment is needed in advance, and the court sets two hearings on different dates, the arraignment and then the trial. At the arraignment the court explains your rights and the charges, and you plead guilty, no contest or not guilty.

Yes, if you say so in the request. Read the TR-200 instructions, then send form TR-205 with the full bail that Vehicle Code 40902 requires, before the due date on your courtesy notice. If you lose and did not ask to keep traffic school in the request, you lose that option for the ticket.

Yes. After a guilty plea you can ask for traffic school, a financial hardship reduction, community service or more time to pay. You cannot combine community service hours with traffic school.

Contact the clerk's office by email, phone or in person to extend the date on your courtesy notice. To change an order the court already made, file the Modification Request Form SUPTMV-056.

Yes, if you were driving a non-commercial vehicle. Contact the clerk's office to request traffic school, and after you finish, call the DMV Mandatory Actions Unit at (916) 657-6525 about the point.

Check first with the Department of Motor Vehicles of the state that issued your license. The court says a driver not licensed in California should ask that state whether completing a traffic school program is appropriate.

Interpreters and language help

Santa Cruz County Superior Court assigns qualified interpreters at no cost in traffic proceedings. Most clerk's offices have bilingual staff, and the court uses a phone interpreter when they do not. Ask the Language Access Coordinator at access@santacruzcourt.org or (831) 420-2427, at a clerk's office, or in court while your case is heard. Complaint forms come in English and Spanish. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
