Court code

Your DMV court code

The DMV gives every California traffic court a five-digit code, and your completion reaches the court under that code. Your citation and courtesy notice name the courthouse that has your case.

Monterey County Superior Court has one traffic code, 27450, and it belongs to the Marina Courthouse, where the Traffic Division handles every adult ticket in the county. The King City Courthouse has no code of its own, and the Marina clerk sets its traffic cases, so a King City ticket still carries 27450.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. For a Monterey County ticket, choose the Marina Courthouse and 27450.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

Your citation carries the citation number, the date and time of the stop, the violations and the place and time you promised to appear. Court staff cannot quote bail until the citing agency delivers the citation to the court.

The court mails a courtesy notice to the address on the citation. It adds the bail amount, the due date to pay or appear, whether traffic school is open to you, any proof of correction needed and how to contest. When a ticket has several violations, traffic school or a correction, the notice may say "You must contact the Court for this bail amount." Then call the Traffic Division. The court's traffic page links its traffic online services and case search for the rest.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your courtesy notice tells you whether traffic school is open and how to ask Monterey County Superior Court for it, and the court's traffic and traffic school pages explain each way. Send the request with the bail and the court's non-refundable processing fee. If you qualify, the court mails a traffic school referral with your completion due date and a list of providers. If you do not, it applies the money to your case and tells you by mail that the case is closed.

Mail for the Traffic Division goes to P.O. Box 2010, Marina, CA 93933-8910, with the case or citation number on the front of the payment. If the ticket also has a correctable violation, file the proof of correction together with the traffic school request.

From citation to certificate in Monterey County

What Monterey County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

Check where you promised to appear. The court then mails a courtesy notice to the address on the citation.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

Monterey leaves eligibility to you. A clerk cannot grant traffic school for a misdemeanor, a violation worth more than one point, a violation within 18 months of an earlier one that went to traffic school, an alcohol or drug violation, speeding more than 25 mph over the limit, a commercial vehicle, or an unresolved failure to appear.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Before the due date, send the request with the bail and the processing fee the way your courtesy notice explains. The court confirms your eligibility and mails a referral.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The referral sets the completion due date, and the court gives no extension of it. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756, costs $24.99, and saves your place whenever you stop.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

An online school delivers the certificate to the court electronically. One conviction in any 18-month period is then held confidential and does not show on your driving record.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Monterey County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Contact the court anyway, before the appearance date at the bottom of your citation, because the court makes that your responsibility. Call the Marina Traffic Division at (831) 883-5300. If you fail to appear or pay by the due date, the court may send the case to a collection agency or issue a warrant for your arrest.

Ask for a trial by written declaration. You pay the full bail, and the ticket must be Vehicle Code infractions only, with no accident and no failure to appear or pay. Read form TR-200 first. The court asks the citing agency for a written statement, a judicial officer decides, and the decision comes by mail. If you disagree, you may ask for a new trial within the time the court's traffic page gives.

Yes, but the option will not appear on your courtesy notice. Return the signed options page from the notice with the bail, the court traffic school fee and a copy of your valid license by the due date, and the court mails you a referral.

The back of the Notice to Appear explains how to view the images. If you are not the person in the photograph, or it is a company vehicle, do not pay if you plan to have the ticket taken out of your name. An owner who was not driving sends the Affidavit of Non-Liability by the due date. Help is at 1-866-790-4111.

If your case is not in collections, ask the court for a fine reduction through the link on its traffic page. Once a case is with the Monterey County Revenue Division, the court's collection agency, the petition starts with a call to (831) 755-5042.

No. The court does not process parking violations, so call the number printed on the parking citation. The Traffic Division takes traffic infractions, the unlicensed driver misdemeanor under Vehicle Code 12500a, local ordinances and juvenile traffic. Other traffic misdemeanors, such as driving on a suspended license or under the influence, go to the Criminal Division.

Interpreters and language help

Monterey County Superior Court provides interpreters free of charge in all mandated cases, and a Spanish interpreter is regularly in the courtroom. For another language, fill in the court's Interpreter Request form and hand it to any clerk at the public counter well before the hearing, because some languages are in great demand. Questions about interpreters go to (831) 775-5400, extension 3800. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
