What the roads, the courts and the rules mean for a citation in Monterey County.

Monterey County runs from the Pajaro River down the Salinas Valley and the Big Sur coast, with 433,729 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025. US 101 follows the valley, State Route 1 hugs the shoreline, and State Route 198 climbs east toward Fresno County. The California Office of Traffic Safety counted 2,315 people killed or injured in Monterey County crashes in 2023, 51st of 58 in a ranking where 1st is the worst. Young walkers fare far worse, with 21 pedestrians under 15 killed or injured, 3rd in the state.

Every adult traffic infraction in the county goes to the Traffic Division at the Marina Courthouse, 3180 Del Monte Blvd., under DMV court code 27450. The California Highway Patrol's Monterey Area covers the coast and the Salinas Valley and its King City Area covers the south county, and their tickets reach the same Marina court as tickets from city police.

To ask for traffic school, you send the request with the bail and the court's non-refundable processing fee, and the court checks your eligibility. If you qualify, it mails a traffic school referral with your completion due date and a list of schools. An online school's certificate reaches the court electronically. A driver under 18 must appear in person in Juvenile Court.

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask most about a Monterey County citation.

The statewide rules

Every ticket written in this county goes to its superior court, which decides whether to allow traffic school. Once in any 18 months, a completed licensed course makes the conviction confidential and adds no point. The statewide rules and their sources are on our California traffic school rules page.

Send the request with the full bail and the court's non-refundable processing fee. You can mail it to P.O. Box 2010, Marina, CA 93933-8910, or bring it to the Marina courthouse.

The court takes the bail and its own non-refundable processing fee and sets both, and the clerk at (831) 883-5300 can tell you the amounts. Mirai Traffic School's course is $24.99, final exam included. If financial hardship keeps you from paying in full and your case is not in collections, the court's traffic page explains how to ask for less.

The court sets the completion due date and prints it on the referral it mails you. Start soon after the referral arrives and finish well before that date.

The court decides, not Mirai Traffic School. A clerk cannot grant it for a misdemeanor, a violation worth more than one point, a violation within 18 months of one that went to traffic school, speed more than 25 mph over the limit, alcohol or drugs, a commercial or tank vehicle, or an unresolved failure to appear. If you do not qualify, the court applies the bail and fee and closes the case.

Yes. The California Traffic Safety Institute's Monterey County list, printed under the court's name and Marina address, shows Mirai Traffic School as E0756, an internet course, including under its Japanese and Russian headings.

Mirai Traffic School's lessons and final exam come in all four languages. At the court, a Spanish interpreter is regularly in the courtroom. For another language, file the court's interpreter request form at a clerk's counter or by email well before your hearing.

Sometimes. The King City Courthouse at 250 Franciscan Way holds a limited arraignment calendar and traffic counter on dates the court sets, for anyone with a courtesy notice whose due date has not passed. To have your case set there, call Marina at (831) 883-5300.
