Court code

Your DMV court code

Every California traffic court has a five-digit DMV court code. It matches your completion to your case at the right court. Your citation and courtesy notice name the courthouse, and the code belongs to that courthouse.

Kings County Superior Court hears every traffic case in one building, 1640 Kings County Drive in Hanford, under DMV court code 16420.

Before the final exam, Mirai Traffic School asks you to confirm your court and its code. For any Kings County ticket, choose Hanford and 16420.

Your case

Find your case, then ask for traffic school

Finding your case

Your citation and the courtesy notice, which the court mails to the address on the citation, both carry your citation number. They also give the date to appear or pay, and the court says that date is not a hearing before a judicial officer. Have the citation number ready when you call, because it lets the clerk find your case quickly. If you are unsure of your due date, search the court's website or ask at the Clerk's Office.

The court's case information site also shows when your traffic school certificate has arrived. Open it from the traffic page, choose Smart Search and enter your case number or name. Open the case and scroll to Events and Hearings. An event called Traffic School Completion Submitted is your confirmation that the court has the certificate.

The court's traffic page

How to ask for traffic school

Your courtesy notice shows the bail, and the court's traffic page explains how to ask for traffic school. You must ask first, in person or by mail, and the court then adds its non-refundable traffic school fee to the total due. The court sets that fee, and the traffic page shows it. The school you attend charges its own fee as well.

The court's mailing address is 1640 Kings County Drive, Hanford, CA 93230. Leave the court's online ability to pay tool out of this, because the court says not to use it to attend traffic school.

What the court does with your ticket, and what Mirai Traffic School does for you.

From citation to certificate in Kings County

What Kings County Superior Court does with your ticket, step by step:

  1. 1

    You receive a citation

The citation or courtesy notice gives a date to appear or pay. If you need more time before you ask for traffic school, the clerk can extend that due date once at no cost, when you ask in person or by phone.

  2. 2

    You check the court's rules

Kings County requires a noncommercial license and vehicle, a moving violation of no more than one point, no alcohol or drugs, and no traffic school on a citation from the 18 months before. Speeding over 100 mph, or 26 mph or more over the limit, does not qualify. A failure to appear or civil assessment must be settled first.

  3. 3

    You ask the court

Before your due date, ask for traffic school in person or by mail and pay the bail on your notice plus the court's fee. Once you have asked, the court gives no more time.

  4. 4

    You finish a licensed course

The court sets how long you have, counted from the day you ask. Mirai Traffic School is licensed by the DMV as E0756 and costs $24.99.

  5. 5

    The court receives your completion

When the court receives proof of completion in time, it reports a confidential conviction to the DMV. If proof does not arrive in time, the court forfeits your fees and reports a conviction.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What drivers ask about Kings County Superior Court.

The statewide rules

This court, not the school, grants traffic school under Vehicle Code section 42005, and you pick any DMV-licensed school. A completed course keeps one conviction in 18 months confidential under section 1808.7. Read the full statewide rules on our California traffic school rules page.

Yes, before your due date, with a trial by written declaration on form TR-205. You pay the bail when you file, and you give up the right to appear, testify in person and subpoena witnesses. A judge decides on the written statements from you and the officer. A not guilty finding returns the bail, and if you lose, you can ask for a new trial on form TR-220 by the deadline in the written decision.

A judge, commissioner or temporary judge hears it, and infractions get no jury. The court subpoenas the officer who wrote the ticket, and you may question the officer, testify, bring documents and call witnesses. You may hire a lawyer, but the court appoints none for infractions.

File the request well ahead of the trial date, by the deadline the traffic page gives. A judicial officer decides, and the court tells you by mail.

Yes. File the appeal with the court within the time the traffic page gives. The appeal court looks only at the evidence from the original trial and takes no new evidence.

Fix the problem, then have an authorized representative sign the citation: a California law enforcement agency, the DMV for license and registration issues, or a licensed inspection station. Bring the signed citation to the court by the due date with the court's correction fee for each violation. Do not pay the full fine first, and do not certify the repair yourself, because the court refuses self-certification.

Yes. Besides traffic school, you can ask in person, before the Appear by Date, for the Child Passenger Safety Program. A judicial officer hears the request and sets a later date for you to take the class. If you return with the certificate, the judicial officer may lower the fine.

The court mails a Failure to Appear notice, and you must contact the court to pay the bail in full. If you do not respond by the notice's deadline, the case ends in a conviction, goes to the court's collections department, and both the conviction and the failure to appear go to the DMV.

Interpreters and language help

Kings County Superior Court provides interpreters in traffic cases. Ask the clerk at the counter or in the courtroom, or print the Interpreter Request Form and bring it to the Clerk's Office or send it by mail. Ask as early as you can, because a hearing without an available interpreter may be continued until one is assigned. The Interpreter Coordinator answers at (559) 582-1010, extension 6225. Mirai Traffic School's course runs in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.
